Switching from ASA to PLA

Hi there,


What is the best practice for switching from a high temp filament like ASA to a low temp filament like PLA?


Just switching using the "change filament" options on the Mini gave me trouble, because when loading PLA after using ASA it uses 215°C nozzle temperature which was not hot enough to purge the remaining ASA out. So it was feeding PLA into the hotend, but nothing came out of the nozzle.

I had to go to preheat, set it to ASA (260°C) and once the remaining ASA started coming out of the nozzle purged again until only PLA came out. That seems like a hassle and not an efficient way to do it.


Am I missing something here? I would assume for changing filaments it would be best to leave the nozzle at the temperature needed to melt the previous filament to be sure it gets purged completely (or heat up if the new filament needs a higher temp).


Any suggestions?

If you have cleaning filament, (some spools come with it) use the cleaning filament after removing ASA. Purge the cleaning filament at the temp you printed ASA, then do a cold pull with it. You could also do the cold pull with ASA and then switch to PLA.

It's also ok to purge PLA at a higher temp then you would print it to help remove remains of previous filament.

I've had good luck with this process:

Load the lower temperature filament, but use the higher temperature filament setting.

In my case, after using ASA, I load PETG, but select the ASA setting. I then purge with the high temperature for ASA. I then do a cold pull with the high temperature matching ASA but the low temperature matching PETG for the cold pull. Then I unload and load PETG with the PETG settings.

I expect it would work with PLA, but the temp difference is a lot. Maybe try three steps ASA > PETG > PLA if it does not work.
