Extruder crashing / grinding during print calibration check
Good day! So I bought the MK3S in November, has been working great up until the other day.
All of a sudden, after the bed & extruder have preheated, when initial 9-point calibration starts, it gets through the first 3 points fine, rounds the corner, slows down on point 4, and then crashes / grinds into nothing in the middle of the printer at point 5 and I have to quickly press the "X" to get it to abort.
I ran the Selftest on the LCD menu, all checks passed. Autohoming also works fine, no matter where the bed and extruder are currently located. I did not notice any missing teeth on the X axis belt.
One note, this morning before going to work I took a look in the daylight and saw that the smooth rods look like they might be really dried out. Might it be as simple as applying lubricant to the smooth rods the extruder travels on?
If it's not a matter of lubricating the smooth rods, any suggestions?

Suggestion - don't lubricate your rods unless it is a temporary measure to keep you printing until you can do it right.
The bearings need to be removed, cleaned, and packed with grease on a regular (annually?) basis.
Or are you one of those that believe Prusa when they say bearings come lubricated?
On your specific problem, check for hitting obstructions. Extruder cable, bed cable, and all those pesky zip ties under the bed.

@robert-rmm200
Thanks! I didn't notice any obstructions for the X axis and it seems to happen only during calibration, not homing the X even from the far right, but I'll take a closer look at all of that. I was hoping to avoid having to tear the X axis down 😢

Hi
Robert is right, but to confirm, you can add any lubricant (that you will clean after) on the rodes, manually move all axis to max and back to min several time (and apreciate smooth coming back). Then turn on printer, and print something. If it is now OK you have to lubricate the bearing, using the method you prefer.

And Robert, you are right, I haven't been warned before to assemble my MK3S, so I did believe what I did read : bearing are coming lubricated. But only 2 weeks after assembly, the lubrification problem arrived...
