RE: dimensions of the XL

I am pretty sure that is not deep enough.  I gues you could sit it longways.

For those concerned about the dimensions of the XL, and where to place it, this mobile workbench could be an option.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-62-in-12-Drawer-Mobile-Workbench-with-Full-Length-Ext-Table-in-All-Blacked-Out-HOTC6212B11M/312063235#overlay

The standard top is 24 inches deep, with an extension that adds another 12 inches of depth.  I am interested in thoughts anyone has on this being a decent option for this printer.  Yes, it is a little pricey, but with the storage and space, would make for a good work bench.

The table is 36 inches deep with the extension up.  With the specifications published yesterday at https://blog.prusaprinters.org/original-prusa-xl-dev-diary-1-faq_65575/ they suggest the printer needs 30.5 inches of space minimum to operate.  Seems like it should work to me, shouldn't it?

RE: dimensions of the XL

It might.  I am unsure how much the enclosure adds.  I think it would be better to have a little more room in depth (40").

I hadn't considered the enclosure might be bigger than the frame. I think I'll wait until we have more information on the enclosure size. I'll bet I can build a table faster than they ship the printer.

That is why I am building a table out of 4x4s and 2x4s.  I am planning on 4 feet x 4 feet to simplify the build.

Makes sense. I'm going to have to put mine together with bolts so that I can get it in and out of the bedroom is going to be in.

I am reviewing my options.  The last one I built, I used long paneling screws.  I want a shelf below for filament.

Very true and I suggest users be careful and plan a larger space.  Some details are not included such as the enclosure.  Plan a table larger than you think you need.

1100 mm / 43.3 in. (w) × 910 mm / 35.8 in. (h) × 775 mm / 30.5 in. (d) – this is the absolute minimum of space you need to have on your table or shelf to run the XL without issues.

30.5 inches - Absolute minimum could be tight.

the XL will require some overhead clearance due to the way the tool heads are connected to the machine.

I would go to at least 46-40 on a table with plenty of top clearance.

The side-enclosure concept they are showing fits within the frame, not outside of it. They are still working on some sort of top-cover.

They have not show pictures of the enclosure yet.  They have shown pictures of the draft shield that may or may not be the enclosure.  I know they are trying to develop a true enclosure.

RE: dimensions of the XL

In my current situation, the XL is going to sit in the middle of the bedroom where I have my printers.  Given it will replace my current tables where post process and assemble/fix printers, I'll make the table oversized so I can still have some space to work.  It's going to be very crowded in my printer room and I'm very much looking forward to it!

My impression (possibly mistaken) from the blog & Prusa Live discussions, is that the difference between three draft shield concept that they've shown & a "full enclosure" is the top cover. I may have missed it, but I haven't seen anything from Prusa that indicates they are developing an enclosure to surround the whole frame. Do you have a reference?

That jives with how I've read the most recent blog post as well.

RE: dimensions of the XL

Well the outer dimensions are definitely very interesting and informative, I’d like to know more about what kind of actual footprint area it needs so I can decide what size table. It’s a printer overlaps that a bit I’m fine with it. I’m probably going to put it on a stand with wheels that I can move around. I’ve actually been working on my MMU2 and putting on a Lazy Susan Since the rubber feet spall off and you have to look at it front and back.

Latest blog post says

"" Machine Itself Measurements ""

excluding spools holders 504mm / 19.8 " (w) x 535 mm / 21 " (H) x 660 mm / 26 " (D)

including spools holders 804 mm / 31.6" (w) x 535mm / 21 " (H) x 660 mm / 26" (D)

absolute minimum space needed to run without issues

1100 mm / 43.3" (w) x 910 mm / 35.8" (H) x 775 mm / 30.5" (D

The blog post covers the physical footprint as well as the minimum area the XL needs.

That is likely correct but you need to read the blog post carefully.

Q: Will there be an enclosure available for the XL?

A: We’ve already teased the additional draft protection and now we’re evaluating the options for the upper cover for the printer. The combination of the draft protection shield and the upper cover would work as a passive enclosure. We’ll share more information later.

The way I take that, they implying that they are evaluating options and are hoping the combination of the draft shield and top work for passive enclosing the print.  They have been very careful not to say that this will be the final enclosure and the only enclosure they will sell.

Source: At least 2 VLOG posts on YouTube in which the Prusa Team discuss the enclosures that they are evaluating.  They subtle hints that they are developing the draft shield and a full enclosure.  In the end, the draft shield may not be sufficient for all printer users and the full enclosure may be too expensive to ship.  Time will tell.

Personally, I hope they develop a full enclosure without a draft shield.  The draft shield appears to be insufficient for my needs and I am concerned it might be easily damaged.
