PrusaSlicer on IpadOS?

It would be great to be able to use PrusaSlicer on the Ipad! 3D design then slice directly from the Ipad and upload with Octoprint! or put send it to a PC or Mac to load it onto a SD card!

This morning I found a Slicer made for the iPad, I’m still evaluating it. But it looks like a start.

I assume it uses Cura as its engine, it is not open source despite that there is a github page.

Not available at this time, but I would love to see it on the iPad Pro.

I'd be more interested to see Plicer on a RPi4 (run Plicer and Octoprint on the same SBC). I'm more of an Android person than iOS, but I don't see running something like Plicer on a touch screen interface as being very comfortable. It would be even worse than a track pad. But that is just IMHO. I've been wrong before, and I'm sure I'll be wrong again. So, I could be wrong now. 😉

What - one mouse button isn't enough?

Ive been messing with Shapr 3D on Ipad! It is actually super simple. But you cannot export highres STLs without paying for it.

I feel like with the Layout of PrusaSlicer. It would be very nice for a touchscreen and the Apple Pencil!

I'm completely unfamiliar with the Apple Pencil, but if it is anything similar to Samsung's S-Pen (used on their Note phones and Tab tablets) then I can see that working in PrusaSlicer. I stand corrected. 😀

I would love to have it on my iPad. But there is no easy way to port the existing code base of Slic3r/PrusaSlicer to iOS. And once you made the port, you need to maintain it and do the port over and over again.

Thanks for that.  Looks interesting but low quality stl output or $20 a month I think I'll pass.  I very rarely do subscription based software and I don't think I'd use it enough to justify that a month.

Same thing for me. Their free license is more or less a demo version. And they have no interest to adjust this license (I asked nicely and got pretty grumpy answer). Looks like they are targeting other users.

Find a student friend with a school email and Shapr3D is free.  I love it.

You know, it's kind of illegal. It's like find a credit card from you friend and it's free ....

I'm not sure if it is exactly illegal (depending, of course, on your jurisdiction...) unless you use your friend's email without them knowing it (even then it is probably quite gray area). But I'm sure it is against Shapr3D's TOS. Sort of like sharing Netflix account login with non-family/household members.

Netflix license allows for multiple users.  A student allowing someone to use their credentials for something they aren't entitled to is fraud.

Also - you can check the Sharp licensing terms and see the free copy is for actively enrolled students. It even requires a current school issued photo id.

RE: PrusaSlicer on IpadOS?

Actually, printing straight from the iPad is possible. I’ve done it with Slicer plugin for Octoprint.

I modeled my model from scratch in Shapr 3D on iPad, then exported the file in high-res .STL , using Safari in SplitView to drag&drop the file straight to Octoprint, which is super easy and fast, without the need for saving .STL file to other locations. Then Slicer plugin shows up, you set it up (it’s surprisingly fast and responsive, especially on mobile devices with a touch screen) and it start printing. It took me a while to set it up correctly, with start and end g-codes, but it works.

It would be lovely to have a decent slicer on the iPad though, especially now, when with iOS 13 or later, you can plug SD cards or thumb drives straight to the iPad.

For everyone interested in using this plugin,  here are my settings for Prusa MK3S (settings probably from Cura profile for MK3S, start and end gcodes copied from PrusaSlicer with one or two lines deleted, because with them it didn't work, slicing profile exported from legacy version of Cura (only .ini format works with legacy plugin for Octoprint). All of this might need some tweaking though.

Start G-Code:

G21
G90 ; use absolute positioning
M82 ; absolute extrusion mode
G28 W ; home all without mesh bed level
G80 ; mesh bed leveling
G92 E0.0 ; reset extruder distance position
G1 Y-3.0 F1000.0 ; go outside print area
G1 X60.0 E9.0 F1000.0 ; intro line
G1 X100.0 E21.5 F1000.0 ; intro line
G92 E0.0 ; reset extruder distance position

End G-Code:

M104 S0
M140 S0 ; turn off heatbed
M107 ; turn off fan
G1 X0 Y210; home X axis and push Y forward
M84 ; disable motors

Legacy Cura profile for MK3S is here

Happy printing!

As usual, open a feature request on github ( https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer). But don't expect any wonders. It's a pretty big feature request.

RE: PrusaSlicer on IpadOS?

@nikolai-r

Porting PrusaSlicer is two parts

Part 1: Porting the slicing engine and core libraries - this is probably doable today, they appear to be written in C++, which is a valid development language for iOS/iPadOS. There may be some adjustments, but iOS and MacOS and Linux share a lot under the hood - so it is probably not as big of an issue as it sounds.

Part 2: Porting the front end - this is a bit more of an issue - but PrusaSlicer uses wxWidgets for the UI - there is an official wxiOS library which has some of the wxWidgets for iOS, but I'm not familiar enough with either PS of WX to say what percentage is available.

The biggest hurdle is probably just getting iOS/iPadOS setup in the project as a target platform so that development could begin. That requires a pretty good knowledge of PrusaSlicer. If Prusa got the initial project setup, it would probably be possible to get a working iPad version going with community help - thought it might also require considerable work on the wxiOS library too.
