PRUSA XL Footprint

I'm just as excited as everyone else on the technology in the Prusa XL.   My biggest concern is the footprint.   Here in the USA, a 25" deep workbench or shelving (63.5 cm in Euros) is pretty standard.   With the Prusa XL footprint, it's going to need custom built stands or shelving.  I've put my preorder in, like everyone else, but I'm concerned about making space for this beast for the increase in 4.5" cubed build space.  They don't effectively show this depth in marketing photos - with the fronts lined up.  They do show the difference in height requirements effectively.   The first mod I'll be watching for is for making it fit in standard depth shelving, perhaps before I finalize a purchase.

I do not know of another printer outside of the XL that includes a tool changer.

E3D has had a 5 head tool changer for a couple years (also a core xy).

That was the hope I had that Prusa would add to the XL, based on a lot of work done there.

You are probably looking at 24 plus hours of build time, it's quite a beast.  Easy to find videos online of the build if you wanna see one

I ended up cancelling my preorder.   If I can't fit in on a workbench, then its moot to buy one when theres no place to seat it.  Wish the best for you other leading edgers.   I'll wait for the tech to make it into the Mk4 in a reasonable footprint.

Bummer.  That is why I am building a new shop and workbench.

RE: dimensions of the XL

I have my Mk3s on an IKEA movable drawer unit.  I put an ‘enclosure’ on it that is a Container store shelving unit with a shelf as a top and the sides made out plexiglass that hang from the posts.  The base has wheels so that I can Move it and get to all sides of the printer.

I’m thinking about making a concrete top for the drawer unit and using that for my XL.   That way, I get the mass I need to help dampen motion and the ability to get around the machine if I have to.

I guess we’ll have to see.

After watching Prusa video plus some pictures and youtube pre-reviews from the usual suspects, I tried to calculate the real size of the XL.

The only dimension we know for sure is the bed, 36x36cm.  According to this, my estimations are :

...60̣-70x90x60... which would be my guess too. Worth note is that the MK3S is already requiring that depth because of the moving heatbed.

Depending on how the feet are/need to be placed I can fit it in my current 50cm deep bookshelf (IKEA) with or without rebuild. Just need to rearrange the filament I have around it, and figure out what to do with the MK3S.

With my great power point skills, I tried to estimate the missing values out of the known 36cm³ printvolume: Seems to be somewhat 48cm wide and 50cm high (+- some cm)

They have posted the footprint -- It's the  almost 32" depth that's the challenge.  I agree that it doesn't seem like its required to be that deep with the build volume.  They've decided to put all of the "junk in the trunk" because its more pleasing from the front, albeit not practical for traditional benches and shelving (25" deep).  Once it's released, someone will build a practical clone or mashup mod that meets this need -- or another market player will approach it.

Printer dimensions80×80×90* cm (31.49’’ ×31.49’’× 35.43’’)* including side spoolholders and top enclosure

I don't mean to say that any space is being wasted.  It looks like the space behind the build space wall is deep enough to let the extruders have plenty of resting space as well as PSU's and other hidden items..  It's just deep.

I have already designed a bench made of 4x4s, 2x4s, and 3/4 -1” plywood.  I plan to place a foam surface and a concrete paver to help reduce sound.

RE: dimensions of the XL

Those dimensions are with a top enclosure. We don’t know which kind of enclosure they have in mind. Let’s assume it covers the whole printer, with spool folders on both sides and extruders tubing at the top.  It’s logical to assume that this enclosure won’t fit very tightly to the sides of the XL. If it’s 80 cm width and deep, the foot print of the machine can’t bigger than 70x70m (including spool holders at left and right).

People that don’t intend to use a full enclosure, or will be using their own designs, need to know the real size of the ‘naked’ printer. For instance, removing the spool holder of one side reduces the width at least 10cm,

So far, Prusa has been unwilling to give real figures (machine size, printing speed, etc..) maybe because they can’t  ..at present.  I suppose that the XL project is not completed yet and the final specifications may change significantly before release date.

As soon as the release any actual dimensions, someone will go ahead and build their enclosure with zero tolerance and will complain bitterly if the finished product is 1mm wider/deeper/taller than the spec, so I don't blame them for waiting until everything is finished and ready to go.

Thoughts on a 3ft by 3ft paver?  I was thinking that I might have to cast my own?  A mini concrete-countertop.

I have never found a 3x3 paver.  In preparation for the XL, I have made my own.

I'd bet the paver doesn't need to be that big.  Just guessing the base size is less the space required. That being said, I'm thinking on 4 16x16 pavers.  Has the added benefit of not requiring the hulk to move. My wife agrees wholeheartedly.

For those concerned about the dimensions of the XL, and where to place it, this mobile workbench could be an option.

The standard top is 24 inches deep, with an extension that adds another 12 inches of depth.  I am interested in thoughts anyone has on this being a decent option for this printer.  Yes, it is a little pricey, but with the storage and space, would make for a good work bench.

RE: dimensions of the XL

I wouldn't want to access drawers or have it rolling during a print. I just want a sturdy table-top. I'll be moving my MK3S & Mini to a rack shelf to make room on my existing table-top.

Having wheels would be problematic as would spending $1000 for it.  I plan to buy 4x4s, 2x4s and some plywood for under $200 and make a table.
