Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
Is there anyone else out there with an XL experiencing extremely loud rattling from the hotend assembly? I noticed another user says their printer is quiet, support had me open up the gear box and check for any loose components but that made it worse.

For mine, I'm getting a loud resonant noise when it's (I presume) spinning quickly to extrude a large, fast line of plastic. I guess I should record some video of it and post it and also check with support to see if it's normal or not. When printing slower I would describe it as fairly quiet. I can say I don't hear the same noise from my MK4- for whatever similarities the two hotends have, this isn't one of them in my case.

Here's a video clip, is this what you're describing? (FWIW this is a draft print at further increased speed).
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
Here's how mine sounds..
RE:
I know you asking about the XL, but could this be the same?
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
The hotend assembly is not the same. This method would not work in my case
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
I'm having the same problem right off the bat. Same situation with lines that have a high volumetric flow rate. I can put my hand on the print head and feel the vibrations from it. Imma take the hot end apart later and re-tighten all the screws. See if that helps
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
If you actually took apart the hotend and tightened screws, did that improve the issue?
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
I took mine apart the other day and I am still having an issue. I'm printing with no plastic housing on the extruder and I am still getting a terrible vibration. I think its coming from the bearing.
RE:
I have the exact same problem.
Did you manage to fix it?
Mine is even louder, mostly on 45 degree movments.
I test printed a long piece that goes from top left to bottom right and when the printer is around the middle it exactly sounds like yours. But not for the first layer and also not for every other perimeter. Just some perimeters create this noise.
I already spent 20h over 3 days with support and we can't figure it out.
I'm about to send this printer back
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
Sorry if this isn't helpful, but I think at that angle only one motor is driving. Is there something broken in the motor perhaps? Or are you sure it comes from the printhead? If you print completely without filament, is the noise still there? Have you tried that?
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
After about 700 hours of printing (so says the print statistics seems a hair off), mine seems to have developed a pretty bad rattle in the extruder as well. It's not the cover because I completely removed that and the noise didn't change, although it was quite prone to resonating.
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
Exact noise that I get.
I have taken apart the extruder assembly and I couldn't find any thing that would be the culprit.
My next assumption is the linear bearing.
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
From investigating it seemed to be the nozzle on the heatbreak hitting a resonance. You can test this yourself by pressing on the heatblock while the noise is occurring.
I fixed it by loosening and moving/rotating the nozzle and heater block to where it was happy and the rattling sound is gone now.
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
I got the same sounds when no extruder is attached to the carrier so I think something within the carrier is damaged.
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
Same here, I can park both hot end and just go and use the move axis and get that rattling from the carrier alone.
Happen when moving the carrier but it's even worse when moving the Z which is pretty weird. Putting my hand and pressing on the bed will calm it down even when it's the carrier moving and not the Z, but it's still making that sound even then, just a bit muffled.
Seem rather unlikely it would happen to all of us and just be something that is damaged.. gotta be a design flaw or something.
Really starting to wonder if it's not the linear bearing as well.
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
I have the exact same noise/rattling.
Not sure where exactely it's coming from, as putting my hands on the printers enclosure parts did not help and putting them on the extruder didn't either.
Hope there is a fix for that, as it is really annoying. I really can live with the sound of the printer otherwise, but that is really like 5x louder than when printing the rest of the time.

RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
Have observed the same thing with my dualhead.
RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly
I was looking for a tool that would help find the location and found out that mechanic stethoscope are a thing. I wonder if it could help with a 3d printer as well.
