Problems separating Prusament spools for recycling

Anyone else having significant trouble pulling apart Prusament spools to be able to recycle the cardboard and rigid plastic? Any tips? Despite working opposite sides in alternation, I managed to almost shatter one side of the most recent spool, sending fragments across the room and a sharp corner into my finger tip. Another small fragment spontaneously went flying 12h later! (Next time, goggles and gloves, I guess.) I suppose I could soak the spool. Any better/faster/simpler ideas?

(I had tried to include a photo using Add Media... shows up when I edit, but not in my browser.)

We use them to store Halloween and Christmas lights 🙂

Just pull them apart from the inner hole not from the outer diameter of the spools. They are just pushed together - no glue.
