RE:

Would this work on the Revo Micro?  Not sure if the Revo Micro nozzle is longer or shorter than the stock nozzle thus making this design inappropriate for cooling...

RE: Revo Micro installation on my Mini+

Hello all,
I am searching a new Hotend for my Mini+. Currently I have (and I really have none) no problems with my Mini+, but I would like to improve (also on speed - if possible).
I found this Revo micro and I find it very nice. But I read here, that there are many issues with it. So it is not a good buy?
What could be the alternative?

Question for those with Revo experience, is it okay to cut the connectors out of the wires and solder instead for a smaller/tidier cable? Will this impact anything such as resistance?

It shouldn't make a huge difference but any reduction in conducting cross section will increase resistance and be aware that if you join them lengthways (side-by-side at the join) then that whole section will be stiffer. I would also use silver solder and sleeve the joints with some heat shrink sleeving, which would further increase stiffness. You'll also void your warranty.

Have a good think though because it'll be a pain to undo. Crimping those pins is a soul destroying experience. I think the connectors are a great idea though because it prevents having to strip out and replace the whole cable if one of the parts need replacing. I hope more manufacturers start doing this although I had pondered whether the connectors could have been smaller. I don't use the Revo any more so can't remember whether they are already Micro JST but even something like a Dupont might be a bit more streamlined albeit much longer. The bulk never bothered me much though and I made the connector section of the cabling a bit of an aesthetic (subjectively) feature. Maybe I'm a deconstructionist!

RE: Revo Micro installation on my Mini+

I have had problems, as have others here, but the numbers are low in absolute terms. I wouldn't recommend it from my experience but if you've read this thread then you must also be aware of the fervent responses from others that love it.

The Revo will not improve speed of filament flow because it has a maximum rated flow rate of 10mm3/s. The V6 is rated at 15mm3/s but empirically seems to be closer to 11 according to some. The speed claims are a bit of a red herring and refer to the speed of the head moving around due to its lower mass, which will have marginal gains on typical prints but then be aware of other artefacts such as ringing or ghosting.

If you want more filament flow then you'll need to look at other solutions but need to consider other components that may then become the limiting factor, such as the extruder. There aren't many after market options for the Mini that offer the full solution, including the mounts etc so you'll still have to print your own mounts, as you would if you go for the Revo.

I have questions---

1. What mount are you using for the Revo Micro?

2. What camera mount is that?

3. What spool holder is that?

Thanks!

Okay I have some good news to report. I spent the past several evenings making sure my Mini was absolutely square and all things were in tip-top shape. I followed all the guidance given here and applied the suggestions for PLA printing profile adjustments in Prusa Slicer. The results of the first print are quite impressive! With some fine tuning (courtesy of Teaching Tech videos), I’m confident this will be a workhorse! Thanks to all here who have laid the groundwork!

I love the prints from this hotend.  Still dialing in but it's putting me ahead in the RC printed race with my son :).

3Dsets.com - they have some awesome models.  Just got the Flatbed Pickup to do next.  Want to try that fuzzy skin on the 'wood' planks for the bed :).  I initially had a few issues with my Revo hotend but it has performed flawlessly since I moved to the edition 2 mount and went back to the original fan. You can get full parts sets from RC Printer (rcprinter.com).  He sells BOM kits for a lot of different rc cars, or you can source the hardware fairly easily.

RE: Revo Micro installation on my Mini+

Back into the thread.  I've been printing with the .8 and .4 nozzle. Not great, not bad.   If not for the mini original having issues with the internal tubing- it's been so long I forget the actual issue- I woulnd't switch.  I'll have to look at the new mounts, but that original one was pretty wobbly.

One thing that I noticed is that the nozzles get gunked up fairly badly- enough to leave burnt material in prints as it fell off the nozzle face.  Using Prusament PETG.

I'd say that one thing that I really wanted from the Revo switch was less stringing, but I don't feel like it is very different?  I guess I need to look at tweaking the settings.

I've just swapped up to a revo micro and a Sherpa mini, i've only had time to do a couple test prints but the difference to stock is noticeable in quality, audio level of the printer, temps (I can run it at stock temps at last), and lastly speed.

so far impressed.

RE: Revo Micro installation on my Mini+

Sorry for the super off-topic, but does anyone know this model of a wizard that @parkingdecent69 shows? I really like to print it myself.

A bit more on topic, I had severe problems both before and after installing a Revo hotend on my Prusa mini. It only got fixed today after installing one of this Creality branded PTFE Tubes and changing retraction and speed settings as advised here by @robee-shepherd. Thank you so much... that really makes the printer work after weeks of failure.

Is there a link to that thread? I cannot find it. Maybe this is causing my problem on the Revo 6 with i3MK3S+ too.

Before putting the Revo on, and after reading a number of posts on the shorter ptfe tube causing binding and extruder clicking, I put on a new blue (capricorn?) ptfe tube.

Anyone have luck with the 0.25 nozzle?  I'm getting bad underextrusion- I assume that at lower layer levels, with such small volumes, that the filament is getting damaged.  I thought it was grinding- and I think it is - but what I think is happening is that the filament is getting roughed up and won't move as well.  After the failed prints, when I unload the filament, there is a lot of drag and the surface of the filament is rough.  It is Prusament PETG, and it is about 1.70 or so on my micrometer.

RE: Revo Micro installation on my Mini+

Your particular problem sounds like a blockage or filament path issue, e.g. narrowing of the PTFE tube or an over-compressed olive. The extruder is what will rough up your filament. If that is rough then it is trying to push too hard, suggesting you have a partial blockage or resistance in the filament path. The drag on unloading could be the swollen tip of the filament struggling to get back through the PTFE tube.

Anyone have luck with the 0.25 nozzle?

I hated my experience with the Micro but I recently had a PTFE tube failure with no spare olives so decided to give it another go. I’d been using a V6 0.25 mm nozzle with no issues so wanted to try again with the 0.25 Revo.

I’m having the same experience again. I did find that the speed seems to be an important factor. I’ve only tried to get a good first layer test print. By default the profile has a 0.2mm 1st layer height but I’d been printing parts with a 0.15mm first layer height so tried changing the 1st layer to 0.25mm with awful results. Switching back to a 0.2mm layer height was better but still inconsistent. I could get a good print but trying again with no change in settings led to a bad print again with lots of over-extrusions. The first layer speed for the 0.25mm profile is 20mm/s. I upped it to 25mm/s and had an immediate improvement but again, after a few prints of exactly the same test I had bad prints again. I also got a lot of oozing. Retraction settings help in general but the 1st layer test print only has a couple so it isn’t the issue in my case but I do believe that there is still too much of a pressure build up in the nozzle that higher speeds help mitigate. I also tried upping to 30mm/s but haven’t got very far as of yet. What is strange is that the 1st layer calibration routine built into the printer always gives a good final little rectangle, and I assume that this is geared towards a 0.4mm nozzle so I want to see what happens if I just use a 0.4mm nozzle profile for the test print.

I'm still having issues.  I think it is around retraction, because large parts seem to print fine, but when it starts to retract, it starts to underextrude.  I really wish there was a way to quantify extruder tension rather than "even with the screw head".

What kind of retraction settings are people using?

RE: Revo Micro installation on my Mini+

I used the settings from this post https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/user-mods-octoprint-enclosures-nozzles/revo-micro-installation-on-my-mini/paged/9/#post-600260

My 2 Mini's have been printing PLA around the clock for 2mo, and the results are flawless! My biggest challenge was getting the printer square and that required removing all mods such as bases, feet, etc... Once I put the print back on stock feet and squared everything, it's been brilliant ever since.
