Support Enforcer Not Working

Hi,

I have a part with some surfaces I know will print fine without support, and some parts that I want to have supported.

I set my settings as follows:

and:

Then I painted the surfaces I want to be supported with "Support Enforcers":

But when I slice, nothing is supported:

What am I missing?

Version:  PrusaSlicer 2.3.0

Thanks,

-Iain

Cant tell from that.  As we say time and again here the single most effective way to get support is to attach a ZIPPED up Prusa Slicer project file.  Use File>Save Project As to save a 3mf.  The 3mf contains the models and ALL the settings you are using currently so anyone loading it can slice it exactly the same and debug it.

The one thing to remember though is the forum only allow a very limited number of file types, thats why it MUST be zipped.  It just wont attach it otherwise.

Out in the woods so I can't open the file but from the preview I put my money on "Don't support bridges" enabled in print settings.

Strange, I opened your project and hit "slice now" without any modification and it turned out like:

Looks like intended to me...

What you have shown there is exactly what I am looking for - just support on that one surface, but not on the counterbored holes or the horizontal through-hole.

Can I ask what settings you modified to get it to look like this?  And what version of PrusaSlicr you're on?  I realize I'm a couple of versions behind, so I'm not sure if this was a bug that was fixed in a later version or something.

Thanks!

That's the fun part, I did not touch a thing... I am on Slicer 2.5.0 for MacOS.

Here is the resulting gcode:

First, update Prusaslicer. Second, change support style from grid to snug. Third, set first layer expansion to 0mm. Fourth, set top Z distance to 0.2mm. Should give you beautiful supports.

I'll give all that a try, but that's unfortunate I'd have to tweak all that - I've had this printer for a few years and it's run perfectly "out of the box" without futzing around with any settings like that.

I don't think you are quite getting Fuchsr's advice.  If you update PS to version 2.5 then there have been changes, one of those is the ability to use snug supports.  Which is what you want to use.  The other bits are for reducing the amount of first layer growth and the contact z distance is good advice for making supports removable easily.

On top of that I would also change the thick bridges setting to be unticked.  That's another new one that changes the logic of how much plastic is pushed into anything bridged and with it OFF it gives much better results.

I too didn't have to do anything to your project to get it to do supports, which suggests a potential problem with your installed profiles.  Which is why the update to latest version advice is good.

With the suggestions made the support generated come out like such -

Thank you for all the suggestions.  I did all of them - 2.5 is great and I didn't realize how easy it was to install (I was worried any customization would be lost).

I also realized that my intent to block the counterbored holes with a layer didn't work as I had only modeled it at 0.1 mm (wasn't sure what PrusaSlicr's threshold was for ignoring or adding in material).  I modified my model to 0.2 mm for those and this solved that issue.

This is what I expected:

Printing now so we'll see!

Aside from the Support Material being completely fused to the part and chipping off extremely roughly, everything else worked as expected.

Thanks for the help!

Yes, your top distance was way too low. I usually use 0.25 mm, and supports come off like butter.

If you are modelling in an extra patch to fill in a counterbore with a bridged layer then it’s thickness depends on what layer height you are slicing at. So a 0.2 thick section is minimum for a layer height of 0.2.  I generally use a fractional over like 0.21 or 0.22 just to be sure it is picked up.
There are other alternate modelling choices though that you can use instead of bridging the whole layer. There’s a few threads on the forum about them iirc.   I’ll see if I can find one of them later.
