Slicing for CR10s - elephant foot on first 4 or 5 layers

Hi, brand new to the Prusa slicer, been using Cura since I started. I like the Prusa slicer much more but have one issue I can't seem to correct. When printing a calibration cube the first 4 or 5 layers are much wider than the actual dimensions of the cube. They gradually reduce in width until they are the correct dimension and then the rest of the print is as it should be. I've tried all the settings I could that would make a difference in my mind. My esteps and flow/extrusion multiplier are set appropriately.

Has anyone seen this kind of issue? I've printed 20 cubes so far with zero improvement.

Not many people on here have Creality printers. so support might not be immediately available. 

Have you tried printing a hollow test cube, with zer0 top layers, zero bottom layers, zero infill and vase mode printing? 

See if this comes out correct size...

Do you see those issues in the slicer preview as well? Pictures both of the parts and the preview might help.

Sounds like a Z-Axis problem on your printer that the Cura CR10 profile compensates for.  At least on a Prusa it is virtually impossible to change layer widths after layer 1 unless you use modifiers to do it intentionally.

I have printed a hollow test cube and it doesn't appear to exhibit the same issue, I did zero top and bottom with one wall. Didn't use vase mode. I also set the calibration cube up with no bottom layers to sort of simulate the same thing. The calibration cube still printed the foot. I then printed a temp tower since it had nice vertical walls. Printed it without temp changes just for the structure. It had two walls and no bottom layers and also had the foot issue. I have printed on the CR10s with Cura and KISS slicer, neither of which had this problem.

I tend to agree with your thoughts. The first three layers seem to be squished together a bit more than expected when printing as compared to when I use other slicers. I'm not sure how to compensate for this in the slicer. I tried adjusting bed height a couple times but had no impact the outcome.

Was talking with someone on the Prusa Slicer FB forum and realized I had the fan settings to the default. With Cura I was cooling after the first layer. The default in Prusa Slicer is after the 3rd... I'll report back once I've switched to after the 1st.

Is the CR10 a printer that does better with "magic" layer thicknesses? Prusas MK3/MK3S hits its natural Z detents with 0.2 and 0.15 mm layer thicknesses (basically any multiple of 0.05 mm.

IIRC some other printers have z-screw/motor combinations that are multiples of 0.04mm

You may do better if you set layer heights that hit 0.04 mm multiples like 0.16

Prusa default for PLA is after the first layer, 
Default for PETG is layer 3
but that's unlikely to be the problem...  Zip your Cube Gcode paste it into the forum and ask if someone can try printing it for you!
I am not at home, so I won't be able to do it until Monday...

Interesting... I have it set for PLA but the fan comes on after 3rd layer. I'm still fiddling with this. I'm seeing improvement but have a few more tests.

Yes, the CR10 is multiples of .04.... .12, .16, .20, .28... I have been using my proven multiples.

Really... I thought I had done the math correctly for my MK3 (back before the MK3S upgrade was available) and I thought I got 0.04mm as the "magic number". For rough or quick prints I use what ever layer thickness fits my model but I have "Quality" profiles set to multiples of what I thought the magic number was (0.04mm). Granted, I don't think I've seen any indication in my prints that keeping to the magic number made a difference on my printer... More of a Linus blanket... 😉

Wow, after 5 days of solid troubleshooting I was finally able to find the issue. Not sure how this started happening or why but it did. It was a hardware issue. The bracket that mounts the gantry on the right hand side was hitting the z stepper mount and causing about a 1mm shift in the gantry where when homed the gantry was just under 1mm compressed against the z axis mount. When printing, the left side of the axis was raising .2 as expected but the right side was just slowly starting to release the tension on the z axis mount not raising at all until the 4th layer which is when the flex was now out of the gantry and it would start raising. I tweaked the z stop a bit to just clear the mount and prints are perfect once again. It is always the last place you look right?
