How do the coordinates in the Part Manipulation Panel work.

I'm sorry if I missed the obvious but I don't understand the Part Manipulation coordinates.

When I insert a modifier block or part or void, etc the coordinates shown after insertion don't make sense to me. The on-line instructions say that in expert mode I should see a pull down allowing local or global coordinates. My slicer (v2.4.1) doesn't have that option and when objects are inserted they come in with Z at a negative number. When I press the "drop to bed",  it moves to another number that's not zero but the part is now on the bed. If I want to move the object up 100mm on my model and add that to the current Z  number, the part doesn't move up to 100mm on my model.

1) Is there a scale factor being applied to the coordinates?  2)Why don't I have a choice between local and global coordinates? 3)What determines the coordinates of the part when it is originally inserted? 4)What's the reason that this is so non-intuitive?

RE:

Very good question. I'm using 2.4.2 and encountering the same issue. The local vs world co-ordinate option (as described in the manual) would be SO useful.

@scott7911

The world coordinates/ Local coordinates "drop down menu" is only available for the "Object" and that drop down is in the Object manipulation Pane. When you add a "Part" to your Object the part's coordinates, scale and rotation are based on the center of the Object you added them to, when you select the part the "Object manipulation" Pane will change to the "Part manipulation" Pane, and parts don't offer world coordinates/ Local coordinates choices because all of your parts coordinates are based on the center of the Object they were added to, as mentioned previously.

All of the Objects and Part's, modifiers, Negative volumes, etc,, all measure their coordinates from the center of mass/volume, for example a Cylinder 25mm tall will have a Z Value of 12.5mm if you raise it off the bed it will be 12.5 + however much you raise the cylinder. If you raised 5mm then the Z Value would read 17.5mm.

I hope this helps, good luck.
