How do I reduce unnecessary travel for infill?

I've been trying to move over to PrusaSlicer (from Simplify3d) for my home-brew printer but there are some oddities about the planner that still confuse me.

Settings:

  • Seam Position: Nearest
  • Infill: 100%
  • Infill fill pattern: Rectilinear
  • Bottom solid layers: 0
  • Bottom fill pattern: Monotonic
  • Top solid layers: 1
  • Top fill pattern: Monotonic
  • Avoid crossing perimeters: Enabled
  • Max detour length: 300%

Below is an example of how PrusaSlicer finishes the perimeter (1)  and chooses to pick the opposite corner to start infill (2)

Similarly, why does PrusaSlicer move back to a different object when changing layers? Is that something I can control? In S3D, I'm used to the next later starting from the object the last layer completed at.

Example where PrusaSlicer finished the last layer (1) and traveled to start the next layer (2)

Pathing is very complex and subject to a number of settings that vary between slicers. We've had more than one instance where a user posted a "bug" about PrusaSlicer only to find out that they'd enabled Avoid crossing perimeters or similar features. Are you experiencing any actual problems or just curious?

This issue is dramatically hurting my print quality. Since I'm trying to print TPU, these random long travels give the filament time to ooze and create larger defects down the line.

Just a guess but maybe set Max detour length to 0 to disable. Also play with seam position.

@pyro_fox

Avoid crossing perimeters: Enabled, and Max detour length set to zer0, is a good start, and while there are many factors & Settings at play here, I'm going to skip the 50 questions and just explain how I've been handling this for the last 4 years. I print a great deal Of TPU and have had this issue many times.

What I do is place other objects on the print bed for example a small box or a small cylinder (scaled down you only want it to be a detour) and using trial and error I position these objects to steer or change the path of the print head or the printing order of the next layer to one more to my liking. depending on its relative position and height it will alter the path.

You can view the travel paths in slicer before committing to the print. this works, however it is more time consuming as it is a work around for the problem, As I mentioned I've been using this method for 4 years now and I have gotten pretty good at it, I would love to see prusa Implement weighted path hints markers or travel hints markers to slicer. but I have little to no faith in them that they would even understand it's need.

Hope this helps, good luck

That does sound pretty tedious indeed. Is there any advice on this issue?

Saved the day - NinjaFlex with no stringing

Print settings > Layers and perimeters > Avoid crossing perimeters > Check

Avoid crossing perimeters - Max detour length = 0

Thank you guys and props to the programmer behind this.
