I'll give the tweezers trick a try.  But its unclear of you do this on the front or the back of the printer. A photo would be good.  I'll try the front.

I tried what you said, and after a couple of attempts, your solution worked, and now I am able to use 5.1.  I'll later try out the various new features.  Just wondering why this seems to be a low prioity with Prusa Developers.
When you look att he firmware menu it looks a lot like a half-finished job.  The Z axis calibration is repeated, there is no menu option to set the whole self test running like there was in earlier versions.  Look Like someone left work on Friday then didn't resume on this Monday, and someone else just published it.  And the altered code was never tested on production printers assembled according to instructions.

As suggested previously,  don't adjust anything,  your machine hasn't moved mechanically,  just put a 2-3mm block (end of tweezers) inbetween the endplate and the bearing you all want to move out of place, do this during calibration, it will hit this and not go over its 'software limit'...  then it'll pass... and it doesn't go past here during normal use in gcode anyway so won't cause any issues until they fix the bug.  thanks.  😉

Yeah. Agreed! To make things 'worse' is that the new Prusaslicer default settings actually urge you to update the firmware. And then the flashing urges you to re-test everything to "make sure it works". Well the machine worked perfectly before .. and now.. it fails it's - is it correctly assembled - tests?! LoL.

And yes I did look in every menu where the "do initial test sequence again" thingie. Thought I had a brain misfiring when I couldn't find it .. I was sure it was there before, right? 😅 and I did look again..

Anyway. Bit disappointed in the QC lately. This update should clearly not have been released. or an immediate fix should have been released after. Especially if your flagship machine, the MK4, is impacted like this. I'm a dev myself and I know bugs can happen but this.. and it's not the first time either this year.

If an update of the Prusaslicer wouldn't have said "you need new firmware for my new defaults" I wouldn't have updated now. Yes I know I can downgrade etc. but still. I mean, I use the Prusalink feature to upload models and that browse button even doesn't allow bgcode files!

Clearly a CQ issue.

// sorry had to vent a bit.

RE: y and z self test failure after update to 5.1.0

Seems this is happening since the change to the first 5.01 versions. Comparing with the 4.7.1  the XYZ test has significantly changed.

The 4.7.1 executes the axes test in one round.

The 4.7.1 did the Z test as a combination of the upper Z position alignment (both motors moving to the max) and hase been finished finding the bottom side of the Z using the loadcell.

XY axis test as it says, starts with "Z-axis calibration" which is the same as the Z-axis alignment further down the calibration (or testing?) menu.

The Y test speed is rather higher at the 5.xx series than at 4.7.1.

As several of you confirmed the little 1-2 mm obstacle between the front panel and the Y bearing let the Y test successfully pass. The most probable issue is that the high speed. Due to this higher speed the delayed stallguard reaction allows to generate more steps than the Y-length steps limit, which leads to Y axis test failure.

I can't believe this worked, but it did. Why lol... is there a changelog for 5.1 or some explanation? Should I move the front bearing forward to stop bed movement as a more permanent fix? 🫠

I am not sure the resting of a 2-3mm end of an object on the end of a y axis rail is a “solution” for a firmware failure of the y axis calibration self test. I would label this technique as a “workaround” for a firmware coding issue.
A true “solution” would be a fix in a future firmware release.

Of course you are correct, and if you read thru the posts you will find thats the expectation.

But you can make it more certain Prusa will give it priority by upvoting the several bug reports found on Github, not just commenting here which prusa resource sparingly.

’k ?

As a newbie, still learning the dance floor routines…I will got to GitHub and vote for the logged bugs against the y axis failure. I am big proponent of open source and a bigger fan of Prusa…both are dominant reasons why I purchased a MK4 kit.

RE:

As a work around I printed on mk4 distancers and put it on the far end of the left Y rod, where there are lighter bumps towards the frame.

After the printer finds the Y- axis far end it runs forward, so the place you put the distancers is equal.

The thickness of 1,5 - 2mm makes a deal. Printing time about 2 minutes.

Try for your printer the best.

Within Firmware would be one click to change the allowed Y length. Hm...

RE: y and z self test failure after update to 5.1.0

I had this when I first moved to 5.1.0. I ended up getting fed up, reflashing the firmware to 5.0.1, which immediately fixed my Y axis calibration failure. I then updated back to 5.1.0 but refused to rerun a full recalibration. It's been that way since. I'm not sure whether 5.1.2 has fixed this issue at all? It's certainly not mentioned in the release notes

RE:

It is in the release notes.  You just have to read between the lines.  At the bottom it talks about having rejogged the self test to align all of the printers - Mini, Mk4 and XL.

One wonders why this was done, as it wasn't broken. Not the sort of thing users would be requesting. No accountability.  There are numerous higher priorities.  Now its something that needs t be fixed, with high priority because it affects so many printers.

RE: y and z self test failure after update to 5.1.0

This is a brilliant workaround solution!  I had stripped my printer 3-4 times last night because of a failed Y-axis test.  Gave up and downgraded the firmware to 5.0.0 and it passed the Y-Axis test.  Printed these distancers and installed it.  Did an XY test in 5.0.0 with the distancers installed and it passed.  The Y-axis reading with all 3 distancers registered 205mm.  Way below the 211mm threshold.

Upgraded the firmware to 5.1.2., did the XYZ test and it passed!  Thank you Pink Clown for the solution!
