Print large projects of same material from several spools
Hi,
I have a larger model constisting of several parts. I want to print it with a single color (PLA) ... so straight forward. When slicing the model I need apx. 2kg of filament in 3 days 🙂 ...
I have the XL multi tool (5) and was hoping that I am able to start with toolhead 1 and after the filament is gone it automatically switches to toolhead 2 (preloaded with another spool of the identical filament) .. But I was not able to find any settings to do this.
Most likely I just overlooked it, since it seems to be a common scenario.
I've set up the printer as 5-head printer and assinged the same material and color to all extruders ... I can chosse different extruders for different parts ... different extruders for different heights ... but I was not able to simply swap the tool after the filament is gone.
Does anybody have the solution for me?

Spool join is available now on the alpha firmware that just came out.

From what I have read, it is not available yet. I saw few posts where users were asking for that exact function. My guess is that it will have to come from a PS update.

Spool join on MMU3 would work, does the XL Multitool have spool join?

I'm sure spooljoin will be along soon, it's too useful to ignore. When I still used my MMU it was a great way to use up odd ends of filament as long as you didn't mind gaudy, candy striped prints.
Workaround: First slice your project. Slicer will report the amount of filament required so allow a buffer of around 5% and buy the next size up spool. Alongside the usual 1kg spools I have 2, 2.5 and 3kg spools and 5, 8 and 10kg are readily available. You may need to make spoolholders for the larger sizes and at some point you will need motorised holders but I expect up to 5kg to just work.
Cheerio,

In the meantime I also contacted support for that one ...
Spool joining is not in the firmware of the XL in the moment ... But it is on the list with a quite high priority ... most likely even in the next version it will become available.

Cool ... it is comming up 🙂 ...
But since I have still some quality issues I need to sort out together with support I will have to stick to the stable version for the time beeing. .. but it is good to hear that it will be in the next release 🙂
Thanks.

This recent post discussion tells you how to find/use the alpha version on the XL: https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-xl-tool-changer-general-discussion-announcements-and-releases/can-the-tool-head-change-automatically-when-filament-runs-out-on-one-head/
