Move the Filament Sensors?
I just got a Sunlu S4 dryer which holds 4 spools. I will put it to the side of the XL. I was wondering if anyone has moved either of the two filament sensors to the same side? It would make threading the filaments a lot easier and shorter tubing if I could put them on one side with the dryer.
RE: Move the Filament Sensors?
I put it under the XL, so i have two outlets on each side.

I have all 5 spools on the right side of my printer. It took some work. First I had to extend the existing cables in length so they would reach. (I wired them straight through. I made not attempt to rearrange the signals.) I then used TinkerCad to 'Frankenstein' the stl files of the left and right side sensors into a single stl and dressing it up to it looked nice. (Fun fact... if you flip one sensor over you can arrange your filaments in order.)
I haven't uploaded the result to Printables (I'm embarrassed to display my 'monsters hacks jobs'.)

I'm embarrassed to display my 'monsters hacks jobs'.
You shouldn't! Just go for it! 😀

Please upload it. This is actually something really useful that I personally would love to have as soon as I buy the XL. There's so much utter crap on that site that you really don't need to be embarrased.
RE: Move the Filament Sensors?
How did you extend the cabling? What type of connector is it?
RE: Move the Filament Sensors?
I cut each wire individually and spliced in a length of like-gauge wire, the soldered the ends and covered joints with heat shrink tubing. Only took about half-an-hour each cable.
BTW, the connectors that Prusa is using only provide one gender of in-line connector, and the mating gender connector is only available in a PCB mounting configuration. (Makes it hard to create/install extender cables.)
RE: Move the Filament Sensors?
I was afraid of that. Thank you for answering. Perhaps I can reroute both to the back using the existing cables?
RE: Move the Filament Sensors?
EvilleBill, I just reviewed the assembly instructions. I see the cable you referenced and yes that does look like I can extend as you suggested fairly easily unless someone has a better idea.

I'm also in the process of moving the spools and filament sensor of my 2-tool XL to one side, in my case the right side.
This can be done from the menu by remapping the sensor, the annoying thing is that you end up with filament inputs of tool 3 at the top and tool 1 at the bottom...
I checked the sensor pinout with a multimeter, the sensor signals are the three middle pins. So if you want to swap tool 1 and tool 3 sensors, you need to swap the 2nd and 4th wires on one end the cable
RE: Move the Filament Sensors?
Well, looks like the what the sensor remap actually does, is to allow you to use the right side sensor connector and sensor block filament input 3 is mapped to tool 1.

Been researching how to do this neatly for a couple days and finally ran across a good parts list:CLIK-mate cable extensions x2 - https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Molex/15135-0506?qs=jFK2DQXLaBzN1OZf0p2Rdg%3D%3D
CLIK-mate female connectors x4 -
https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Molex/503159-0500?qs=3OKVfsn1b5A33HKbe66Ncg%3D%3D
Process:
Use the existing filament sensor cables, but route them to come out the cut-out in the back where the wire bundles are for extruders 1 and 2.
Solder the female CLIK-mate connectors back-to-back to create a coupler. They nest very well and the soldering was easy. I filled the gap between the connectors with hot glue and then put heatshrink over them. A coupler may already exist, but I did not find one.If you choose to not couple to the existing cables, you will have to re-pin the extension cables. They do not work as-is.
Connect the coupler and the new extension cable.
I can not take credit at all, I found all of this on printables - https://www.printables.com/model/802662-xl-filament-sensor-wire-extension-method-relocatio
I kept the info I shared the, but I ordered my pets from DigiKey. Hope this helps others!
RE: Move the Filament Sensors?
You can swap the filement side cables with much longer bed controller cables (available here on prusa eshop).
Here are 2 videos that show it working:
RE: Move the Filament Sensors?
I moved mine to the rear but ordered the longer cables and plan to move to one side for use with my drybox.
RE: Move the Filament Sensors?
This is great information. I can't quite make out the part number. Can you provide that as well as the length of the cables (which I may be able to with the part number)? And do you have an updated photo with the sensors using these cables.
Thanks
RE: Move the Filament Sensors?
Is the pinout the same on the modular bed controller cable as with the filament sensor cable?
RE: Move the Filament Sensors?
just installed and had to re-pin the cables
