RE: XL full enclosure

Well, those are your two options at this time, unless you want to take the third and design your own.

$1200 for some acrylic and plastic fittings is a joke. You're better off going down and buying some glass panes for a few dollars each and having them cut to size.

Whaaat… Has there been some info released or is this speculation.

The item discussed earlier in this thread costs circa $250 nzd in PC/ACRYLIC sheeting plus the filament and hardware items

Speculation?  No.  Only mentions on Prusa Live that it is coming.  I suspect that they are busing just trying to get the printers and upgrades out the door.

1200 USD is a joke but I'd love to see where you can find custom cut glass in the size of 70x90 to 90x90 cm for a few EUR. Maybe you can find it dirt cheap like that somewhere in the US?

Custom cut PMMA at 5 mm thickness (I'd consider that the absolute minimum at that size) at a fairly competitive site (kunststoffplatten.de) costs 47.50 EUR per sheet. That makes roughly 250 EUR. Those are also end-customer prices, the material costs shouldn't be above 300 EUR for such an enclosure.

Everyone knows it is expensive.  No way I would pay it, but then again, I will build my own.  Probably just use the Cabby design.

Looks great. Im still waiting for my XL to ship but this design looks promising. Maybe just a few minor tweaks. Like adding a thermometer and filter.

Interesting option.

There is no detail about assembling, hardware or information about the panels except that they need to be laser cut.

yes. Also the thickness is an issue for me, since local stockists have only set sizes like 4.5 mm. meaning I’ll need to adjust the mesh files to suit.

The problem for me is the intricate cut to the acrylic.  I do not own a CNC machine and hand cutting to that degree is not gonna happen.

Honestly same for me, but I think I will just size the Acryl Parts a little smaller and 3d print right angle edge conectors of course they will be two part for the moving edges. Is there any reason to think that wont work?

No idea.  I see that front with the jigsaw pattern and wonder if that is needed.

I downloaded the files and found the BOM as well as DXF files for the acrylic.

Do you have a laser cutter or do you plan to pay to have them cut?

I do not have a laser cutter.  This will be the biggest issue with this option.

Someone suggested to the designer that he should consider having a vendor like Printed Solid cut the acrylic for him.

I think there is room for simplification of the design.

There are outfits out there that will cut plexiglas to spec.  For example:

https://sendcutsend.com/

and they'll give you a price online.  I'll probably use them (or someone like them) to cut the enclosure acrylic pieces that are too big for my 400x600 mm laser.

RE: XL full enclosure

Hey y'all, just dropping in to let you know we are working on an XL enclosure, I have the concept napkin-sketched, just waiting for my day-one preorder of the 5-head to go through so we can prototype it out.

It'll be following the design concepts generated in the "Boxify Enclosure" but using the same sized extrusions (and same color) as the XL frame.

Going to take some time though. If nothing else, our XL is going to look sick 😎.  I'll post the prototypes to this thread when it's done for some feedback, should be open source if we can get it finalized.

Still, I love the design that @mvikman posted, it's a great start and I think the front doors look amazing.

Acrylic cutters I know of:

Xometry (cheap, quality is so-so)

Sendcutsend (faster, better quality, but pricey)

Just be aware that most other locations can't cut anything over 16".

RE:

Acrylic is very easy to work with. All you have to do is use a straight edge and the backside of a box cutter blade to score it a few times on both sides. Then lay the acrylic on a square edge table with the score line on the edge and snap it with a little pressure. You will get a super clean break on the score line. Now curves have to be cut.

I do all my own panels.

Get a small piece and try it.

RE: XL full enclosure

The easiest way to handle PMMA panels (or composite panels, PC panels etc) is to simply order them custom cut. There are various sites around offering that. I use for example www.kunststoffplatten.de). Good services charge barely more for the custom cut pieces (complex shapes, holes etc are possible, too) than for standard rectangular ones.

RE: XL full enclosure

Since my xl 5h is in transit I'm really focused on figuring out the enclosure thing.  I'm not really keen to build my own.   This look similar to other designs mentioned on here and is less expensive than the clearview thing.

https://www.3dupfitters.com/collections/prusa/products/prusa-xl-enclosure-acrylic-case-box-tent-kit

I'm leaning towards this as I've not seen a ton of other options I can buy as a kit and simply put together.

Thoughts?
