MK3S/MMU2S Upgrade kit problems/confusion
Hi folks,
I got my kit to upgrade my MK3 /MMU2 . I dutifully followed the instructions to a tee. I printed all the parts, disassembled the extruder, and rebuilt everything according to the manual...I thought.
When I was done, I noticed some parts remaining: A steel ball and 2 magnets. I went back over the manual to make sure I didn't miss anything. Nothing!
I was using the upgrade manual located here: https://manual.prusa3d.com/Guide/3A.+MK3-MK2.5+-+extruder+upgrade/1069?lang=en#s18842 . Look at step 10.
Once I got everything together, I started having problems with the filament not loading . I did the IR sensor adjustment that was detailed in the manual, but I could not get a consistant filament load.
I then went on the forum and noticed people talking about the magnets and steel ball. Based on one of the troubleshooting links, I went to this manual:
https://manual.prusa3d.com/Guide/5.+E-axis+assembly/1055?lang=en
Look at step 6. It clearly gives instructions for using the magnets and steel ball.
I'm really frustrated because I spent a whole day on building this and it looks like there are 2 different instructions for how to build this thing that are very different.
Which one is right? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry in advance for not seeing what might be obvious.
Re: MK3S/MMU2S Upgrade kit problems/confusion
If you are using an MMU2 the steel ball and magnets are not needed. The sensor is modified so that it is activated by the bondtech door moving.
if you do NOT have an MMU2, then you need the magnets and ball as the sensor is located above the gears. (second set of instructions).
Re: MK3S/MMU2S Upgrade kit problems/confusion
Thank you. That explains it. I'm very relieved that I don't need to take the whole thing apart again. 😉

I was just as confused. Read the the manual several times to make sure I did not miss anything.

You might want to recommend support add that to the next version of the manual.

Re: MK3S/MMU2S Upgrade kit problems/confusion
What part of the instructions goes into adjusting the sensor? If you have a step number or section link can you send it. I'm having difficulties with the 3.6.0/1.05 and the sensor not working. Maybe I missed something I was supposed to do even though I thought I also followed the instructions to the tee too. My printer on filament load is just continuously jamming filament through the nozzle to the point I just have to shut off the printer to get it to stop.
I had read a few other people on this community site having similar confusion so I was aware of the ball and magnets bit.
The wiring support is a little sketchy to me in lacking some clear instructions/pictures for where everything plugs in. I also notice that they added that orange ring around the mmu2/ir sensor block to all the illustrations. I don't know if I got that part that foolproofs the plugging in of those connectors but I'm going to check. I have a suspicion after many days frustration that that's my issue.

kinda sad they went to 1 sensor, I liked the idea of 2 but I get it.
I have a Prusa,therefore I research.

There are two filament sensors on the Mk3+MMU2S; FINDA at the top + IR on the Bondtech.

Re: MK3S/MMU2S Upgrade kit problems/confusion
Hi Prusa team,
I have just set up my mmu2s, I have tried printing three models now, all three failed, this was due to the inconsistent filament sensor detection, I need help with getting my filament sensor to be consistent after the new upgrade.
Re: MK3S/MMU2S Upgrade kit problems/confusion
You might want to look at this:
https://help.prusa3d.com/article/wprwemqsmj-ir-filament-sensor-calibration
Might help if the IR sensor does not clearly see the paddle arm from the extruder door clearly. The aim is when filament pushes the sprung loaded bondtech gear apart slightly, the movement of the filament door of just a mm or so triggers the IR sensor. Might need some adjustment.
RE: MK3S/MMU2S Upgrade kit problems/confusion
I just built my upgrade kit i3 MK3S MMU2S, and am having issues with it operating. The pulley and selector will only work if the adruino board is connected to my laptop via usb cable. If it's not connected all led lights sit at red / green solid. I am assuming it's a power issue but how do I resolve it.
RE: MK3S/MMU2S Upgrade kit problems/confusion
I have the exact same problem! Also, the printer does not seem to know there is a MMU2S 'on board'.
Did you manage to solve it?
Thank you,
Dominique

I just found another post of someone with a similar problem and a fix!
I solved it using the above solution 🙂
Kind regards,

RE: MK3S/MMU2S Upgrade kit problems/confusion
Hi,
I just get my (free) MMU2 S upgrade kit for MMU2.
I have already installed MMU2 on a MK2.5 last year which ended upgrading the body extruder as well.
It seems i need to upgrade extruder body, but can't choose which version ? In the upgrade kit i have some magnets but not sure it is the version i need ?
I need to print all parts as i choose not paying them, so a bit confuse on what parts to print and upgrade on the extruder ?
Any help welcome,
Happy print

I would ask in chat, they are amazing in chat and seem to either know everything. or know who knows what they need to know. They seem to enjoy their job too, which makes it a good experience to chat with them.
RE: MK3S/MMU2S Upgrade kit problems/confusion
Hi,
Is there a way to get the extra 1cm of feed if I use a MK2S & MMU2S with magnet and steel ball ?
While loading filament the IR sensor get's triggered before the filament is entering the Gear of the extruder.
I would like to keep the ball/magnet IR sensor with my MMU2 is there no setting to tell the MMU to continue pushing x-mm after the detection of filament at the IR-Sensor?
