Skelestruder V1 in beta

If you are feeling adventurous and brave, you can try out my geared extruder for MK3. I have a few testers who are having good luck with it. Still in development.

Not that adventurous with my printer yet to give it a try. Looks very promising. :geek:

Wow, this looks awesome. I'm 100% for jettisoning the Prusa design, but I'm going to wait until some instructions are available, and some user feedback.

Not for the faint of heart, but there is a PDF with some pictures on the Thingiverse page if you want to take a look at that.

Re: Skelestruder V1 in beta

Does this rely on having a short body motor to replace the existing extruder motor?

I have a tester who is using the stock motor. He wants extreme torque. But the idea is to be able to use a much lighter motor. Either will work.

Also do you have any pictures of what it looks like finished?

Thanks, I completely missed that. I also found the #skelestruder room on discourse.

Re: Skelestruder V1 in beta

I'm coming pretty late to this game, but do you need any more testers? I've already printed out all the parts in PETG and PLA as specified in the PDF, I have recommended 17mm stepper motor, the gt2 belts, bearings, shaft, all the hardware required, and I have a substantial amount of various mechanical hardware just on hand (different sized gt2 belt loops, pulleys, idlers, a drawer literally filled with ball bearings of various sizes and matched tolerance shafts to go with them, etc. etc. I used to be really into robots so I have a lot of crap laying around =P) so I could probably fairly easily test any variants that might use slightly different hardware if that is at all needed.

I also designed my own extruder holder for the Flexion extruder a while back for the MK2S, and used that for a while, so I am definitely no stranger to this sort of thing. And if something doesn't work, I make it work and have fun the entire time I get to do that.

Basically, is there a more recent version than the files on thingiverse? If so, I want in :D. I'll happily give you very thorough feedback and reports on any issues/bugs I encounter.

It sounds like you might not be interested in more testers at this point, so I understand if I need to wait for public update like everyone else. I thought I'd ask before I assembled the version on thingiverse, and just in case you were interested in another tester.

Anyway, very cool design, and great CAD skills. I'm impressed.

As of Beta, everyone can be a tester. All info should be on the TV link. I update it as I go now. I would love your feedback. You can PM me on discord. I am working on some new goodness.

I put up a video on Thingiverse to show better handling of flexible filaments.

Re: Skelestruder V1 in beta

I've got it printed, I'm still trying to find time to go to the bearing shop and get the 105's. I had a couple lying around but they had flanges on them, which pushed the filament guide out of place.

I also realised after the fact that the filament sensor holder (and the extruder gear holder swing) should probably be printed in something black, I printed everything in prusa orange. Is a very long 3mm bolt enough to throw through the extruder gear or does it need to be the 3mm shaft? I'll have a dig around town here and see what I can find.

It’s a 5mm shaft. I listed a couple options in the assembly instructions. Misumi can make one for you with flats.

Re: Skelestruder V1 in beta

I'm no expert at these things but this looks pretty cheap and fit for purpose. A Dremel or similar will cut it down to size pretty easily.

I had a look at Misumi Singapore again (I'm in Australia). 8 months ago couldn't register to purchase stuff (without a business number), but now I can. The shipping cost adds $65 USD, so it's not really an option.

I'll still try to find something local, I imagine I could just cut up a cheap Philips screwdriver.

Yes, my first was hacked from a 100mm rod like that. Worked fine.
