Layer shifting after filament change in the middle of the print

Hi friends,

I was printing a bust with my MK3S. Everything was going smooth but the spool ran out when nearly %90 of the print. The printer prompted me to unload a few centimeters of the remaining filament. I unloaded the remaining filament then I loaded the new spool. After that, the printer resumed to print but I got a layer shift at that time. So my question is "why this is happening" ? Does anyone have advice regarding solve this annoying issue? Unfortunately, I didn't take a photo of it but I can assure you that it is layer shift cause I've lived this issue so many times

Thank you very much and happy printing.

Still no answer 🙁 I still having this issue. Plus sometimes the printer can't load the filament. Filament gear doesn't take it. :/

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I have the same problem..

I'm experiencing this too.  Pretty frustrating because it happens on the bigger/longer filament hungry prints.  Small things seem ok.

Any luck with this problem?
in my case, after a filament replacement the print gets shifted in the Y axis
Using prusa i3 mk3s+  firmware: 3.11.0-4955  OctoPrint: 1.8.2

The first probable cause that comes to mind is, that you hit the bed while changing the filament. You have to be very careful not to change the extruder or bed position during filament change. The printer has no way of detecting a change in position while it's waiting for the filament change and therefore cannot compensate for that. This results in a layer shift after filament change.

This is not the issue. This is being caused by faulty hardware or software, not user error.

RE:

I have the same issue, just a shift of 1 mm but very noticable. Annoying on 22h+ prints. Always in Y-direction, didn't touch the bed so can only be a SW issue.

RE:

Usual hardware problem causing layer shift: loose belt (check tension with Prusament PETG tension meter) or loose grub screw on motor shaft. Both unlikely since it happens on filament change.

Conclusion: software problem. For troubleshooting: What software are you using (print server, firmware). You do not use a print server and are running original current firmware a software issue is very unlikely, which only leaves "user error" as possible cause...

I'm using bondtech LGX with latest firmware, no other mods on my MKS3+. (had MMU2S once but threw it away)

Did multiple tests and can replicate the issue. Just cut filament => goes in filament change mode => NOT coming even close to the bed when feeding new filament (1000% sure not a user issue) => on resume ALWAYS the same ±1mm shift in Y like in picture above.

Has anyone found a solution to this?

Having a similar issue on a perfectly working Mk2s upgraded to magnetic bed (2.5s).  Bondtech head is only non stock part.

Layer shifts on M600 color/filament change.

Do you also use bondtech firmware on the printer due to using the head? I'm starting to think the issue is somehow in the bondtech FW. Do you also have the issue on Y only and always the same shift => ±1mm?

RE: Layer shifting after filament change in the middle of the print

This issue still seems to be relevant - on an unmodified MK3S I pretty much reliably will get a small layer shift after a colour change. Interestingly the error often seems to correct itself if there are multiple changes in the print (The next colour change shifts back to the original position). It's almost as if the position is getting lost 1 step out of place by something during the change process.
