Help with Layer Shifting Issue

Hi,

I'm trying to print a Montana Mask and having trouble with layer shifting.  Please let me know any ideas to fix this.

I had two failures initially.  Both about 1:30 hrs into the print, and in both the layers shifted enough to ruin the print. In both cases the sift was obviously in the y-axis (front to back of the machine).

I didn't see anything immediately wrong with that axis... the belt had good tension, etc...  Plus, just last week I printed several complex parts on this same machine with no layer shifting issues.  But I went ahead and loosened the drive gear, realigned it, and tightened it back up.  I also wiped down the rods.  The machine lives in my garage so dirt can be an issue.

I tried printing a third time.  This time, there was a level shift, but it didn't completely destroy the part so I let it run.  Interestingly, the level shifted back and forth several times during the print. You can see that in the photos.  Hopefully, that can provide a clue to what the problem is.

Thank you for any ideas on how to fix this.

Same issue as here https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-how-do-i-print-this-printing-help/weird-layer-issue-shift-on-this-model/

checked out and cleaned everything as you did, my printer is in the garage as well within the famous enclosure and the PSU out of it. Did you turned off the filament sensor as suggested by expert users? I did it but that did not solve the problem.

The issue seems to have suddenly appeared to many of us this month, it would be interesting to have some tip by Prusa

the issue started a couple of weeks ago when the ambient seasonal temperatures started to raise, this is what I had this morning.....

Thanks for the response and directing me to the other thread.

I haven't done the latest firmware updates so I'm currently on 3.7.2-2363.  I shouldn't have any issues introduced by 3.8 .

It is interesting what you said about the seasonal temperature change.  I originally thought it might be a temperature issue since the garage was getting pretty hot in the middle of the day yesterday.  But it had cooled down by the time I did this last one.

What is the famous enclosure?  When I originally put it in the garage, I put one of the white cloth photo booths around it. Started to have a string of print failures which I eventually figure out were due to the ambient temperature getting too high.

@rudye-m

The enclosure is made by 2 ikea lack tables, some plexiglass and several printed part to form a mk3 dedicated enclosure.

there are several versions available for download, here is one as an example https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/22390-lack-enclosure

Could it be the belt isn’t tight enough? So some movements the belt is slipping?

That looks like a loose pulley grub screw to me.  It’s the classic amount of shift for a loose pulley. Always check the simple things first.

I loosened and retightened the pulley on the motor right before this print.  Also, insured that the screw was engaged on the flat part of the shaft.  I don't think that's it.

Now, I've gone around and double checked the mountings for the idler pulley and the motor.  All look to be tight.  I'm starting a new print with a few changes to the slicer... rotating everything 45 degrees and reducing the size.  We'll see how it goes.
