Unable to do a Factory Reset

I just finished upgrading my Mk3 to Mk5s, flashed the Firmware to the latest version of Mk3s Firmware and proceeded to calibrate. After many unsuccessful attempts to complete calibration, checking hardware, etc. I came across advice on the Forum to do a Factory Reset and then flash the Firmware to clear out any residual settings from when my machine was a MK3.

The first 2 steps are:

  • Hit the reset button, the X on your LCD module, immediately followed by pressing and holding the selector knob.
  • After a few seconds, you will hear a beep and get a new screen that says "Factory RESET". Now, release the knob and a menu will appear.

However, holding down the selector knob for up to a minute, I never hear a beep or get to the Factory RESET screen. The LCD displays a progress bar, which spans multiple rows. It always completes the top row but will freeze midway when showing progress in the second bar.

Anyone have any ideas how I can get to the Factory RESET screen? I've had a quick look at the Forums and can't seem to find anyone with a similar situation.

Can anyone help? I contacted Customer Support too and sent them the video link below:

Video is of Firmware upgrade and subsequent attempt to factory reset. The re-flashing was suggested by CS and did not work the 2 times I tried.

If you can access the terminal interface, M502 followed by M500 does a factory reset. Not sure why the long press isn't working for you, but this might be a way forward.

@bobstro

Thanks bobstro, accessing the terminal interface is not something I've done before and I'm unable to confidently ascertain which of the search results I get for "prusa terminal interface" is relevant to what you're suggesting. Could I trouble you to outline the process, I'm sure I'll be able to work it out from there OR link me to an article describing what you are suggesting?

Thanks ever so much

I use OctoPrint and that has a built-in interface. Pronterface is another popular option. If you have another serial terminal program, you can use that. What desktop OS are you running?

PuTTY can do serial, but Pronterface probably a better choice.

I've connected to the printer and there is an input interface to the right of the default GUI and I entered the  reset command but get this:

SENDING:M502 ; RESET!
Command not found!

Whoa, am I mistaken? That's the Marlin sequence. I thought I'd done it on my Mk3 at least once. Sorry about the false trail if so.

Only send "M502" to verify.

Ok, isn't there a reset menu option? (Sorry, not near printer now.)

That's OK, I appreciate the help, and your patience.

There is a "Reset" button in the GUI next to the "Connect" button but pressing this is equal to me physically pushing the X button on the machine, just restarts it. Entering M502 with and without the quote marks is ineffective in the terminal built in the GUI, unfortunately.

Firing up PuTTY brought UNIX (Silicon Graphics) flashbacks and a lot of confusion as I have completely forgotten how to use it. Managed to connect, got a load of garbled text and promptly shut it down. I'm afraid I would classify myself as "end user with occasional back end foray"

M502 is listed as supported Mk3 gcode. Now I'm confused.

Mk3 uses 115200 speed.

Got PuTTY working, thanks for the baud speed tip - but no joy with 502 or 500 command

I'm a bit stumped. If I had space in the freezer I'd dump the whole printer in there until it resets 😀

Thanks for your help anyways, if you have any other suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them. In any case, it's not been a waste of time as I can eliminate this option of the CS get back to me.

I'm stumped. Expected it to work on Mk3. Almost sure I've done it on mine.

RE: Unable to do a Factory Reset

I came across this trying to solve the 'factory reset' problem I was having. I finally solved the problem and want to share.

The instructions from Prusa say to press the knob immediately after the reset is pressed. This is true but they do not emphasize that immediately means almost simultaneously - ie. a fraction of a second after. I find this is the problem I was having. When done correctly a screen will flash up asking what language you want to use. You can then scroll down the list of reset options.

I can understand the reason Prusa devised the reset this way. It was to prevent an accidental reset caused by pressing just one button or the reset and section button at the same time.
