Nozzle replacement

How many hours of printing before the nozzle wears out? I've seen figures like 50-100 hours.  My print quality suddenly dropped. I have 600 hours on this nozzle.

Also, do steel nozzles last much longer?

Thanks.

RE: Nozzle replacement

I wrote some related content yesterday:

https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/english-forum-general-discussion-announcements-and-releases/is-prusament-petg-matte-black-abrasive/#post-680040

I have got over 2,000 printing hours from a brass nozzle using PLA & PETG - but I've also had so much wear from just 150g of copper filled filament (when I was too lazy to swap for a small job) that recalibrating the first layer was necessary after a couple of hours; copperfill is three times the density of plain filament so that really was a small job.

Also, do steel nozzles last much longer?

For the lower level abrasives, yes, for really severe abrasives, still yes, but not by much.

My print quality suddenly dropped.

What are the symptoms?  If you have not been printing abrasives there may be another cause.

RE: Nozzle replacement

Thanks. There's a photo here https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/postid/680064/

It's depositing an uneven flow. Last night it was printing a flat piece and the nozzle stuck to a section and tore it off the bed. I had just recalibrated first layer.

I had just recalibrated first layer.

It looks a little too low, too much squish - but it's not sticking well and the finish is deceptively shiny ... What filament is this?  What is the print temperature?

It can't hurt to do a drastic print-sheet clean; rub neat dishwashing detergent (Dawn/Fairy) into the whole surface, wait a few minutes then rinse it clean with very HOT water.  Dry with a fresh paper towel and handle by the edges only.

Cheerio,

RE: Nozzle replacement

I agree with Diem, this doesn't look like a worn nozzle issue. Is this PETG? Cleaning the sheet and raising the nozzle a bit would be my first steps of troubleshooting, and ensuring the temperature is appropriate for the material. The photo reminded me of my misadventures trying to print (inadvertently) PETG at PLA temperatures...

It's PLA. I really think it was the buildup around the nozzle. Performance much improved since I cleaned it.

Thanks. I'll keep my build plate clean. 😊
