Filament Sensor not detecting Run-out

Im running firmware 3.1.2-576 on a new I3 Mk3. Filament ran out mid print, and the sensor didn't detect it. It fed the filament beyond the geartech, then printed in mid air for a few hours. There was no filament in the "sensor" at all.

Is my sensor defective? Or is this a known bug?

I'd really like to be able to depend on the runout sensor, because I have a few "almost out" rolls of filament.

Hi Ewr2san,
Is your filament sensor actually turned on / enabled?

I think so:

Under Tune:
Fil. sensor [on]
Mode [Normal]
Crash det. [on]

Any Other suggestions? Or should I open a support ticket?

So an update.. It seems that my runout sensor does work on some filaments, but not others.
Works on White filament, but not stronghero3d silver/grey.

My printer shipped with some Prusa silver filament. I'll try that soon.

Same Problem here.... I have a Mk3S, brand new. Doesn't stop... The sensor is working fine. It detects if filament is out (shows 0 in settings menu) but the print does not stop / pause...... I treid a few different filaments. Extrudr, Prusa, SunLu,..... nothing. Strange thing: it worked perfect for one week.... but now doesn't

@buggyracer79

Does you autoload work correctly? You already have mk3s which works differently than mk3. In mk3s there is sometimes an issue with tight mount and you have to put between the fillament sensor and the extruder body some distance parts, if you browse here you will find the solution.

I'm new to 3D printing. I have the same issue with my MK3s.  The feature is turned on in the menu.

Initially I used some cheap Chinese black PETG filament. The printer stopped when the filament ran out. I couldn't bear the smell of the noname filament and I bought some Prusa PETG orange filament.

However it doesn't detect when the prusament orange when it runs out. It happened twice already.

@nagjames

try this: https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/25728-prusa-mk3s-ir-sensor-spacer-set

Is your printer grinding? Bearings squeaking? Motors smoking?
Step 1) Wash your Steel Sheet
Step 2) Return to Step 1

Does your autoload feature work correctly?
This is a opposite to filament run out, where ssnsor should detect you put the fillament in. When the fillament is out what is the value of ir sensor in support menu?

RE: Filament Sensor not detecting Run-out

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your help and troubleshooting tips!
Last night I shutdown the machine after the print cycle completed – without detecting that the filament was out.
This morning I turned on the machine and tested the sensor state. IR was reading 0 – no filament.
I unscrewed the sensor and tested the state with a piece of paper. The sensor was reading 1 when the paper was inserted and 0 when I pulled out the paper.

I started a small test print and after heating the nozzle and bed the printer stopped and asked to unload then load a the filament. So it was doing what it supposed to do.
It started printing OK. While it was printing I switched to sensor monitor mode. The IR sending was reading 1.
I cut the filament about an inch from the print head to test to sensor state.
When the filament ran out the IR sensor switched from 1 to 0 but the printer kept printing without a filament. – even though sensor was reading 0.
It completed the 10 mins cycle as if there was a filament in it.
This seems to be a SW problem to me.
I didn’t hear any weird noise, besides the IR sensor issue the printer is working fine.

Have you guys seen this issue?

Thanks,
James

If you want the quick test, flash 3.8.1 from here:

https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/releases/tag/v3.8.1

Repeat the test and see if that fixes it.  If it doesn't then, I would reach out to chat support.  Is there a reason you're running that version of firmware?

I got confused in posters - so disregard my question about firmware choices please.  However, I stand by my advice on reflashing and rerunning the test 😀

RE: Filament Sensor not detecting Run-out

quick update.

I contacted Prusa support and they recommended to re-flash the FW.

After re-flashing the FW to 3.8.1.-2869 the issue is resolved.

Thanks,

James
