Did I kill my headbed?

Hi all,

 

New to 3D printing and Prusa. After a few print, I started to have various issues and decided to go through a full calibration. During Z axis, I reacted too late to the "take the paper" error and got my nozzle making a nice mark in my headbed. Did I essentially kill it and need to replace it?

Does it heat properly?

Do you have something like an infrared digital thermometer that can tell you if it is or is not heating evenly across the build plate?

@jsw I don't have such a thermometer (yet). But it's good to hear that this is the expected failure.

No big deal.  Keep us updated is there are an issues.  I have one with far more damage.  I call it ole rusty.

As long as no copper lines come to light, the bed should be ok. You can tape over the damaged area with a very thin (0.01-0.02mm) small peace of Kapton (Polyimid) film.

And I would re check/adjust the PINDA sensor.

I thinks yours is a little high causing the nozzle to hit the bed. Mine runs the calibration fine without the sheet of paper and never touched the bed.

@karl-herbert that's good tip, thanks a bunch!

@baklin indeed, moving the PINA around fixed the bed hitting. This is probably one of the most delicate piece to adjust (I had a lot of back & forth prior to finding the right level).

A while back there was a report (here? might have been elsewhere) where someone was able to very carefully scrape/sand/whatever down to the bare copper on the heat plate and very carefully repair a break with silver solder.  IIRC, the 'heater' is actually like a copper foil print on a PC board.

That does not look deep enough to hi the copper.
