Calibration at print start crashes

The initial calibration before any print doesn't work anymore. It doesn't cover the whole print bed with its 9 calibration points and it makes an ungood sounding noise (see video). Can anybody tell me, what  is wrong?

Did you change anything before started printing?

More info, will give you more help!!!!!!!

Check all belts, if they are not to loose.

Check grub screws if this assembled correctly.

Clean rods, and put oil on all rods, oil with PTFE inside.

Check if all bearings are running smooth, move by hand.

Check , by moving all axis to end points, if they hit something, like cable ties that are wrong assembled.9ther is only a little bit off room).

Then do a full xyz calibration.

Do a z-calibration.

Done.

Did the calibration twice to be sure...

During my last print something went wrong and I got a "big ball" of filament wires hanging at the printers head as it printed some time in the air. I cleaned it and it should be fine...

During the xyz calibration everything works fine. The head reaches the right side of the printer (not like in the video). in the video it seams jammed but it should be fine...

Big ball is normally because the first layer is not sticking enough, or extruder is leaking, or model comes loose.

How to:

Clean bed with dish soap(2x wash), then it will stick.

Make fist layer 100% low otherwise it can come loose.

And check the printer after a few layers, normally it comes loose in the beginning.

Small object with only a little part on the bed, use a big brim attach to the model. Small object can also come loose.

Thanks for the answer but the first layer was ok. And the following 20 layers or so went fine as well. Then something went wrong and I got the ball.

On the next try of the print (and all following tries...) I had this "crash at 9-point calibration" error.

Do you have an idea, why it stops moving and makes this noise?

@kkarsten

it sounds like you don't know what the problem is, and yet you are rejecting suggestions that may help...

Question,

Was your perfect first layer and the following 20 or so  layers still attached to the build plate after the blob appeared?

@joantabb

sorry for my bad english: I didn't reject suggestions. I did try the suggestions but unfortunately this didn't solve the problem.

And yes, the first 5mm were still attached to the build plate but the print head was about 5 mm above the printed parts when I saw it.
So it  printed quite a while without contact to the lower layer...

And since then I have the trouble with the 9-point calibration. The funny thing is, that it works all fine during xyz an z calibration and the failure only occurs in real prints.

@kkarsten

could your extruder have collided with the model and caused the extruder to have been printing off set from the model, leaving the filament dangling in mid air, and ultimately forming into a blob?

with the printer on, but at idle, try pressing the lcd control knob until you see

Z:                0.0 or similar, then rotate the knob until the z axis rattles against the top of the frame on both sides?

then Autohome,
and try  calibration again...

if this works, do yourself a favour, use the LCS menu's to set 7X7 Mesh Bed Levelling.

and try a print

@Joan

You are probably right about the blob.

And I tried the process you suggested. During autohome and calibration the extruder reaches the right side of the printing bed.

But die Mesh bed leveling fails like in my video. The 7x7 bed leveling on the other hand is in fact better as the print head seems a bit slower and the noise is less loud compared to the 3x3 leveling...

As it worked in the first step it isn't physically blocked, is it?
Is it possible, that there is a problem on the software side?

Karsten

RE: Calibration at print start crashes

Hi Karsten,
are you using standard firmware, on a standard printer? If so, It is unlikely that the firmware is at fault.
you could try flashing a new image of the firmware. then follow the entire setup procedure starting with a Factory reset including clearing all stored data.
then all of the calibrations but I would use Jeff Jordan's 'Life Adjust Z My Way' for the first layer calibration

https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting/life-adjust-z-my-way/

@joantabb

Thanx!

I did flash the new firmware and it reported an error. But at xyz calibration it showed an x axis error (x axis too small or something) which I could fix with some lubrificant. and now it works!!!

I'm still a bit worried about the flash error (is it serious?) but I'm very happy, that the printer works.

Karsten
