MK3s power failure

I was printing from the SD card on an MK3s.  About 30 minutes into the 3-hour print, it just stopped.  When we looked at the printer, it was just showing the startup window.  We could not see anything wrong.  So I created a more modest print, only 18 min.  About 8 min in, the printer stopped.  This time, I got to see the display.  It was completely off.  Then it came back on, and went off again.  The printer will no longer turn on.  Absolutely totally dead.  We replugged it (both ends of the power connector), tried the on-off switch.  Printer is totally dead.  We suspect the power supply is dead.  What to do?

Did you check the fuse of the power supply unit?

I try to give answers to the best of my ability, but I am not a 3D printing pro by any means, and anything you do you do at your own risk. BTW: I have no food for…

Yes.  All three fuses are good

RE:

I assume your power outlet is OK....

I would first measure the output voltage from the PSU (power supply unit) for the proper DC voltages after checking the wiring for loose connections or intermittent shorts and all the fuses. Sometime the wires look OK but display problems when twisted, in particular the bed heater and the extruder heater that move a lot.

Remove the power failure sense wires from the PSU to the board and try again.

If voltage is not present at the board unplug the DC PSU wires to the board and see if the proper voltages are present at the PSU. If they are PSU is OK and there is a short or too high a load . So remove the bed heater and the extruder heater connection and see if the board comes back to live. If PSU voltage is not present with the loads removed the PSU might be bad (checked its fuse?).

Might be time to get a cheap DMM ( digital voltmeter with DC AC voltage and resistance reading). They are easy to get at home, car or hardware stores.

Good luck with it and keep us posted.

Do I really have to get a cheap multimeter?  I’d rather use my $400 Fluke meter.  Or the multimeter built into my $12000 high-end oscilloscope.

Ha 😀 , you got me here. My go-to DMM these days is a Keysight U1252B and my old Fluke 8060A that it replaced a while ago.

I tend not to assume people have one! It should then be a piece of cake to figure if the PSU, the power loss circuit or the card is at fault here.

Cheers.

I expect that by 'the three fuses' you mean those of the Einsy board.  See that Richnormand wrote the fuse of the PSU. It's worth checking this one too. Any minimally decent PSU has at least one fuse,

RE:

The link I provided in my first posting does contain a reference to all 4 (four) fuses, including particularly by reference the PSU fuse.

I missed that fourth fuse.  However, I have now checked it and it is perfect.  But when I put it back in, plugged the unit in, and turned it on, it actually turned on.  Makes me think the fourth fuse might have had some kind of corrosion, although I saw no signs of any.

But now, I have another problem: my computer can't see the printer via USB.  COM13 exists as a serial port, and USB tells me it is a serial port, but Pronterface won't Connect.  I'm using Pronterface because I'd been using Octoprint and it stopped working.  But apparently it wasn't an Octoprint problem.  I can print from the SD card, but that is extremely inconvenient (not to mention painful, because I don't move all that well).  Pronterface worked for a few prints, but since I was able to restart the printer, it no longer connects.  Standard diagnostics, including rebooting the computer, recycled the printer power, and nothing has helped.
