Upgrade order - Mk3S+MMU2S to MK3S+ or MK3S to MK3S+ then MMU2S

Hello fellow makers,

I'm going to upgrade the MK3S we have at work to MK3S+ in 2 days. I also have assembled the MMU2S aside. Reading the manuals, I couldn't find a clear answer.
AFAIK, I should upgrade the printer first, then add the MMU2S afterwards, or can I combine both upgrades ? (best option, because it would ensure minimum downtime).

Any help much appreciated 🙂

Thanks in advance.

There is a difference in functionality of the filament sensor between Non MMU and MMU activity.

On the non MMU Setup, the filament activates the filament sensor which then activates the extruder and draws the filament into the printer.

In the MMU Version,
the filament operates the finda, in the MMU, which then causes the MMU Pulley, to feed the filament towards the extruder, as the filament feeds the extruder is started  drawing the filament into the extruder, which then activated the filament sensor to advise the controller of the filament's arrival, at this stage the MMU Idler is moved out of the way to allow the extruder to control filament movement

If you build the printer with the MMU Filament sensor chimney installed you will find that presenting filament to the chimney, does not activate the filament sensor...
You can physically push the filament in between the bondtech gears, which will displace the bondtech idler, and activate the filament sensor,
which is not particularly easy.

I would turn the MMU Filament sensor, off and use the LCD Menu to load filament until the MMU is installed.

Or if you want automatic filament loading before adding the MMU, build the printer as a standard Mk3S+  first, and re build it for MMU Later.

Regards Joan

General advice is build the Mk3S+First and add the MMU2 / MMU3 afterwards..
what I would do is build the mk3S+ with the  filament sensor chimney for the MMU check that works, except for Autoload (Because the chimney is not good for that.) and test the printer, if all is well, add the MMU

Thanks, that was my first thought. And my main concern about the MMU2S. Let me put it clear, you mean setting the IR sensor on top of the extruder right ?
So if I want to insert a new filament, I just can't put it in ? I'm missing the point here I think.

Your explanation is clear, I'll probably make the upgrade first, as I'm not the only one using the printer, people could be upset when they are changing filaments.

Thanks for your time and have a nice day.
