How powerful a UPS do I need?

I tried connecting my printer through a 255 watt UPS, but got an overload warning from the UPS during preheat. Does anyone know how many watts I need?

And......

How powerful a UPS to be able to run for 10 to 15 minutes? I was thinking the same as my power gets turned off after every storm for a few minutes (I guess for nearby line repairs).

The assembly instructions say that the power supply output is 12V, 240 watts. But the power supply is not 100% efficient, so the input power will be greater than the output power. So a 255 watt UPS may well not be enough (and lots of folks don't like to load electrical things to more than 80% of their supposed maximum anyway).

I'd measure how much power the power supply draws from the mains. Using an inexpensive meter like the Kill-A-Watt should be good enough. Watch it and remember what the peak power is, and what the typical power is during printing. Size the UPS rated wattage to at least 20% greater than the peak power, and if you want 15 minutes of typical printing the UPS should have a watt-hour rating of at least 1/4 the typical power.
