dimensions of the XL

Does anyone know the external dimensions of the XL? I need to rebuild my storage unit.

the build dimensions are posted at 36×36×36 cm (14.17’’×14.17’’×14.17’’)

but the enclosure and operating dimensions are not 100% yet and will likely still change.

From what I read in the comments of one of the videos, someone extrapolated what the dimensions would be based on known things nearby (kind of like doing mildot calculations for sniping when you need to figure out distance to target).  According to that, it appears to be approximately 60cm wide by 60cm deep by 68cm tall (depending on the tool head cable assembly).

But really, you have 6-9 months to build a cabinet and they will release the details once set way before they ship 😉

I like the idea that it is already partly enclosed, meaning whatever extra is built can be really snug fitting around it

I can't imagine that the outer dimensions will change. As I understand the information so far, software and sensor adjustments are still being made. As well as the saving of supplier parts.

presumably without fiament spools...

Any possibility that there could be a heated chamber with 5 1kg spools beneath the printer feeding up the back of the printer to the different tool heads?

They have estimated them in the Prusa Live. But not officially announced them

Prusa Live stream and they "estimated" dimensions... I watched it and it was kinda embarasing to say the least. It was dedicated to XL, but printer couldn't be seen, because it was out of camera angle.. I mean, seriously?
And when someone asked about dimensions, they started guessing..and concluded "it's about 80x80cm.. but that's not dimension of the printer.. it's the space needed to use printer... comfortable..". Again, what kind of answer is that?
I can understand, that some specs can't be revealed before production starts (or even after that). But printer dimensions for sure doesn't fall into this category. Luckily nobody asked about printer weight...

I think they are waiting for the enclosure finalization to release any sizes.  It is the only reason I can surmise.  It could also be kept close to the vest to limit clones.  Who knows!

That is an interesting approach. I solved my problems differently on my MMU. My spools hang high above my printer across a broomstick. And I have a rough fixture to help feed filaments into my MMU from above. My jamming issues were almost entirely corrected. I suspect the weight of the hanging filament under the unrolling spool was helping to pull filament off the spool as needed. Whereas, I think your approach is an operation that slightly works against gravity.

I also have a bar that catches the uncurled ends of spools before they coil and drop into my print. The ends wind around it and hang there until unwound.

Since I am using height above my printer for the filament feeding path, I wonder if there could be a heating assist that gently dries up some moisture from the filaments. Something like a heated metal tube used to run the filament as it is being pulled and used. My hope is the filament could be drier before it reaches the extruder and there would be no water vapor forces in the heated nozzle.

I like your thoughts and comments using gravity (the free energy) for controlling/assisting with filament removal from the spools.  My largest concern was for the moisture (water vapor) control and you touched on that.  I've found very nice setups where the filament is removed from spools over the printers and it seems to work very well.  My concern is that making something that contains the spools with some level of moisture control accessible (reaching in and out of it) over the XL might be a challenge.  Having the spools above the assembly may require the XL assembly to be positioned very low to make accessing the spools easier.  I see the frequency to access the print bed sheet being slightly higher than the spools but I could be convinced differently.

I believe the fewer the bends and straighter the path to the hotend the better and more reliable.  I'm with you on the top down idea for simplicity and reliability.

I couldn't quite tell if the filament currently comes together at the back (thinking more than 1 extruder) of the XL before running to the extruder.  If that was the case I was trying to keep the current path of the filament the same and move the filament spools beneath with the path going out the back and up.  It would keep the footprint of the machine (side to side) a bit tighter, as would your idea of keeping the spools over head.

Either way I was looking to spark a conversation and possibly get a few thoughts other than mine.  I've learned a lot from others in these groups and I'm always interested in hearing what others have to say given the diverse experiences.

I am moving in a direction opposed to the XL concept as built for shipping. My product is custom poker chips. That is why maybe I might sound like I make no sense sometimes. I have different directions for using this new Prusa.

For Example, the last thing I want is to print poker chips like baking cookies on a sheet. I don't need print bed space. Rather, I need hot ends moving at all times. And the second to last thing I want is wasted time and wasted materials in purge blocks. I also don't need all that Z axis for a single poker chip at a time. There would still need to be the range of X because they way the tool changer works. But I wouldn't need all the Y axis, either.

I will be thinking how to make modifications that keep all the great features of the XL but focus everything onto a very small print area. Then I can build a farm of clones that have all the fanciest features. And mostly everything makes my clones look like they would be top heavy systems. The only thing I can see to move under the heat bed would be the power supply because it generates heat.

I will not be interested in purchasing whole XL printers and placing them side by side on a shelving system. Rather, I am trying to design two meter rails to hold as many printers as possible in a single shared Y axis that is common to all printers. I think this style will get me more hot printheads working at one time within that 2 meter footprint. Wish me luck.

Any reason you don't print a lot of chips on the same bed, you need a lot of the same order out fast or something?

Heck, you could print one on each bed segment.

The bed segment is perfect for one poker chip. Especially when there is no purge block waste.

But I want hot extruders moving, not cookies baking on a sheet each waiting for their turn to get the next layer from the common extruders. I want to approach one printer for one poker chip. There would be no need for for all the z axis and all the y axis offered by the Prusa XL. It would be stupid to buy a couple dozen of those printers for poker chips.

Yes. I use the smallest nozzle supported. Therefore my print times are very long. I have achieved QR codes for my poker chips that are the smallest recommended size. I print very small, yet legible text and graphics. One set of poker chips is a set of playing pieces, and each is a playing card from a full deck. It is a Texas Holdem variant game where the poker chips serve as both the playing pieces and the wager. QR codes are crypto wallets to hold value and the graphics are for creating a full deck of cards that can be played.

I first considered a layer of water soluble layers between the chips. Print them in stacks that can be separated when the job is done. Not only do I fill the heat bed, but I make use of the Z axis area.

The print would take so long that something bad is certain to ruin the print before completion. It is easier for me to make smaller printers and more moving hotends. Elimination of purge blocks makes the tool changer a far superior approach when compared to what I have been designing with MMU filament selectors.

I do not know of another printer outside of the XL that includes a tool changer.

After watching Prusa video plus some pictures and youtube pre-reviews from the usual suspects, I tried to calculate the real size of the XL.

The only dimension we know for sure is the bed, 36x36cm.  According to this, my estimations are :

- Width of the machine. non including the spool holders : 50cm.  ( I assume these holders can be removed )

-Width with one holder: 60cm. With 2 holders; 70cm.

-Height of the frame from the bottom to the linear guides: 55cm

-Height including the extruder:  65cm

-Height up to the top of the filament tubes: 85-90cm

I can’t get a clear idea of the depth, my estimate is 55-60cm.

I don’t bet a dime on my guessing, but if I’m right within  +- 5 cm it would be nice if Prusa sent me a free bag of Haribos. 😋
