RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly

I am also experiencing loud rattles from the toolhead. They are apparent when moving the X through its range from the LCD controls. The loud rattle is in the middle of the axis.

I have removed all the cases and shrouds from the toolhead, and have reached the conclusion that the PCB rattles against the tabs that secure it to the stepper motor. I cant find a way to make those tabs any more secure, and have resorted to a dot of superglue on each tab.

Why Prusa has chose this assembly method is beyond me when stepper motors usually have threaded mounts on both sides. The PCB could have through-holes and use nylon standoffs. I expect this design to change in the future. I will update this post if the superglue makes any difference.

RE: Loud Rattles from Hotend Assembly

I bough a cheap mechanic stethoscope at canadian tire and while it's not the magical tool I was hoping it would be, it did sound like the linear rail guide were the loudest thing on my printer.

I took off the X axis to play with the guide directly and you can definitely hear the balls bearing moving when moving the guides. They are also not exactly super smooth. You can see me in this video giving them a push to see how far they go and they don't go very far.

Never had linear rail before so not exactly sure if this is standard or not.

They are SRS12GN THK, not clear if it's cheap or not. I saw them for very cheap somewhere the other night but can't find it again today. They seem to go for anywhere from 10$ to 120$ online.

I have a similar resonance to the one I have on the XL on my mini when the bed and head move, just a lot less loud. Always assume it was time to remove the bearing and lube them up again, but it completely went away when I tried the new alpha firmware with input shaping, even when doing that 15min benchy.

So I now have big hope that it could quiet down the XL once they finally implement input shaping.

I also bought a large 24x24 inch paver to put under my XL and while it didn't remove the resonance, it did quiet it down a lot, to the  point I don't hear it in other rooms anymore.

I brought this up to support regarding the bearings and they said that I have a loose screw in the nextruder assembly.

I've taken it apart 2 times to check and there was nothing loose.. They also said to remove the googly eyes I had on the nextruder cover because it could cause rattling...

This is hilarious lol

Yeah I also disassembled one of the hotend to investigate another issue and nothing is loose in there, I don't even have any of the plastic part anymore beside the fan.

Yup, my assembly doesn't have the plastic either.

I'm sure one day the issue will be solved but for now, it sits in another room.

I do have a feeling it's the bearings, I want to freeze them but they didn't even answer that when I asked them. I don't think they even know what grease to use because they're supposed to last "2 years"

RE:

the bearings dont even have wipers/seals on them....the grease will be mostly gone withing a couple hundred hours of printing.

no greasse nipples either, good luck greasing them >:

some of the noise will be the balls inside the bearings colliding and rubbing on their neighbors. might be less bad if there was grease in there...

Unfortunately the dab of superglue did not help. Moving the axis with no toolhead attached (only the metal carriage plate) does not cause my terrible sound, but I found the sound is created when only the printed part of the toolhead is attached, with the heatsink and entire rest of toolhead assembly is not attached.

Comparison between the printables hosted part and my part shows some differences, but the pccf filament is out of stock at the moment so I have not yet printed a new one.

I send this Video to Prusa

They said that these are normal resonance noises with printers of this size.

Hopefully input sharper will bring an improvement.

That video pretty much shows my issue to a tee..

It's pretty sad that they consider this normal. There's clearly an issue..

Good approach to test that stuff out. Same for me, shows exactely how mine's behaving (single toolhead, semi assambled)

Same problem here with long 45 degree moves. On my machine, it is most likely the right linear rail. Printing time so far approx. 2 hours.

Really annoying...

Best regards, Peter

Exact same problem on my dual head semi assembled.  The video with different speeds changing tone does give hope that input shaping may help.

Have similar issues, but not that noisy. I hope input shaper will help with that. Also found this Video

Really hope that future fixes to these will be rolled out to the early adopter / first batch owner.

There is a metal part inside the back profile where the toolhead(s) mount. Did you try holding/securing it in place and try again? This did fix the resonating sound for me.

Having the same issue as others here with the diagonal moves on a fully assembled 5 tool purchase. Currently troubleshooting with the online support person. Some of these moves are going over 80+db for me when measuring with a phone app.

My XL has the same problem. It is very loud and annoying. Even if Prusa thinks that would be normal I think that is not okay

Anyone tried the new firmware with input shaping yet?.. can't wait to see if it fix the resonance.

After my first short test, the printer has become a lot quieter. I will try again in the next few days to provoke the noise.

Did the tests from the video with the new firmware and slicer. Unfortunately, there was no significant change.
