Non Prusa Filament issues

I'm having issues using filament other than Prusament.

Some prints are fine, but then all of the sudden there's no filament being extruded. The nozzle and hotend are not clogged so I believe the extruder can not grip the filament enough.

Prusament has a texture which seems to improve extruder grip.

Anyone else having issues and maybe a workaround for this?

I have glow in the dark PLA that works ok for smaller prints, but when I go above 3-4 layers the issue starts. Black PLA seemed to work ok up until after a few prints.

No issues whatsoever with Prusament.

Most 3rd party filaments I've used are a bit less than 1.75mm diameter. I have my extruder tension screws set tight enough to grip these and have no issues. Do you hear the extruder skipping during the print when this happens?

@bobstro

I don't really hear any extra noises when the extrusion stops.

How far in do you tighten the screw? Is there a 'sweet spot' when the filament is in?

I don't have a Mini, but on my 2 printers, I look for extruder teeth marks when I unload the filament. If the teeth marks are so deep as to deform the filament, I can loosen the screw tension. If there are worn areas where the teeth are slipping, or very faint marks, I can tighten it a bit more.

I've noticed that the issue is mainly located at the large pinion in the extruder.

It seems to jam more often than not. After a few prints I need to dissasemble the unit and remove the large pinion from the bearing. It's really stuck in there so I have to seriously pull.

I've made sure the screws are not to tight on the housing. So I'm not sure what else could cause this.

Any other ideas?

+ the extruder idler is not doing what it should. The screw is not sitting flush with the plastic and when I loosen it the door on the other side comes loose.

I have a feeling something is not right
