My Mini+ has developed a quirky selector knob

After a long time of trouble free operation, my Mini has developed a quirk. The selector knob doesn reliably select.

I can rotate it until it clicks and it shows the next setting before going back to the original. It seems to act similarly when I when I turn the selector Clockwise or Counter Clockwise. I eventually can get to what I want which is why I say it is a quirk rather than a problem.

An additional and perhaps related symptom happens when I do a fast scroll. I notice it most when I want to raise the Z axis position. I crank the knob several rotations clockwise to raise the extruder and the Z axis will lift, hesitate and even reverse before continuing to lift.

The most annoying thing with the knob happens when I try to select between several options. Like when I am loading filament and I get a choice between Correct Color, No and Start Over. If the answer is NO and I move the knob to that, I have to be very careful to press the selector in the center or I might get one of the other choices.

What’s going on?

Hello, Zoltan,

Thank you for your response.

Unfortunately it leaves me confused. Particularly about what you mean by "context".

Is there something incomplete, confusing or wrong with my post? If so, what?

Your link tells of the various  ways I can get support. Are you ‘isuggesting that I should ask my question elsewhere?

RE: My Mini+ has developed a quirky selector knob

I've started getting some double-clicking (switch bounce) from mine.

I have to click a couple times to get the wheel to register.  Ironically, same issue with my MK3S....

On the Mk3S+ the issue of the button press not being registered consistently is usually due to a small particle (usually filament) in the rotary switch. Removal of the LCD cover and removing the particle should fix it. I am not sure about the issue where the button press is registered but then the menu goes back to the original on the Mini though.

I recall there was a fault with some of the first Minis produced where the rotary encoders would lose steps until they were basically unusable. I believe Prusa had to start using a different manufacturer, and replaced the display board free for users who suffered from this issue if they were still under warranty. If the advice here doesn't help, and yours is still under warranty, you may want to get in touch with Prusa support as there might be a similar case here.

My rotary encoder has become unreliable too. It gets worse.

I haven't contacted Prusa yet. But maybe I should do that. 🤔

Huh. I've been finding the rotary encoder on my Mini+ a little too sensitive. I go to select a menu option and click it, but then it moves down or up to select the next option and I end up clicking on that instead. Doesn't happen too often, but still often enough to annoy me. I thought it was just a quirk with the Mini+. Is this something that can be fixed by cleaning/lubing the rotary encoder?

I have the same problem with my Mini+ and it's most noticable when manually moving the axis position. I rotate the knob and the axis will move then reverse direction before continuing on.  It ends up in the right place but it's not a smooth movement.

When you rotate the knob, the firmware is registering the pulses count. As it moves slower then you rotate it has some delay, so when you later turn in opposite direction, it moves up until it reaches the the last up move signal ,then starts to move downster.

RE:

Guys would be great to mention whether this is generally happening everywhere or only specific for some submenu as it could be HW or FW issue.

For me, that behaviour is most noticeable when selecting which file to print.  Never used to be a problem, but over the last few months I’ve lost count of the number of times I have selected the wrong file by one entry 🙁

Yes I'm turning the knob faster than the printer can move the axis but I'm not turning it in the opposite direction. I'm spinning the knob to change the position displayed on the screen the letting the printer catch up.

It's most noticable when I want to raise the z axis to clean the bed before starting another print. If I turn the knob and raise the axis by 100mm on the screen the printer will move the axis 100mm but not in a single smooth action.  It might raise 75mm then drop 5mm before rising again.

RE:

The shape of the default winged knob actually contributes to this issue, since the added torque and the potential to click the button off-center all pile up. So one thing to try would consist of simply removing it altogether and manipulating the potentiometer firectly. And then printing a replacement shaped as a regular, cylindrical rotary knob.

RE: My Mini+ has developed a quirky selector knob

I have this issue also, and it happens regardless of what menu I'm in or what I'm doing. I have to be careful when loading filament, after the initial purge when it asks if the color is correct, if I move to select No it will jump to the other options when pressing the button in to select my option. I've just completely removed the knob and it helped a bit, but it definitely didn't have this issue when new.
