loud noise when changing firament

Hello Community,I have a problem with my Prusa Mini+ year 2021.

It worked without problems until I changed the filament this morning. When I change the filament, the extruder motor starts up normally and after about a second it starts to make a loud screaming noise. The noise sounds like an overloaded stepper. After that I checked:- Screw on the motor shaft tight- Idler screw not too tight- Bouden cable and Nozzle free- Extruder Gear not dirty

The problem also occurs when I do not load filament. So there is no torque on the stepper.

With Pronterface I could confirm it: The problem occurs at high speed.Changing the connections has unfortunately not brought me any insight. The problem does not move. If I plug the extruder stepper into the X-slot, everything seems to work normally, but the X-stepper on the E-slot also works.

Attached is video.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Greetings Nils

so x motor into e slot works no noise correct if so please remove e steper motor from printer and do fillamnet load and see if noise still comes from the motor

Please help me out by downloading a model it's free and easy but really helps me out https://www.printables.com/@Hello_474427/models

That's right, with the X-Stepper everything goes as intended. Just had a little more time, the E-Stepper seems to be broken. At slow movements everything is okay, at fast it runs very choppy.

RE: loud noise when changing firament

Hi Folks!

is it 100% confirmed that the problem is really in the stepper and in the stepper alone and nothing to do with the extruder assembly conditions? For example excessive torque to win and/ or wear conditions of gears / bearings / idler wheel?

I had an identical issue on my 2022 MINI+ (same loud noise I hear and see in the video) a few weeks back while unloading the filament and it happened right after I put new gears and the bearings in the extruder (filament was getting stuck too often and I decided for a mechanical refresh). The biggest gear (accessible through the inspection window) was completely stuck and impossible to move by hand while the motor was "screaming" for help, indicating that the stepper was also locked to movements. I attributed the stepper "instability" noise issue to reaching an excessive torque condition in the extruder (1 bearing stuck? new gears too tight ? or the filament idler screw being too tight?). I disassembled the extruder, replaced the bearings again, ensured that the position of the two gears was allowing a smooth movement by hand, loosened up a bit the idler screw and never had the issue again.

If the problem is in the stepper as you are suggesting I am thinking that I might have fixed the wrong problem and I might need to order a new one soon!

Thanks and happy prints!

Also had this problem with my mini+ kit.

Have solved this by putting a drop of the supplied grease on the large gear.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for your comments, that is a very good point, @eap6dra will check that when I reassemble everything.

I wrote to support yesterday and got a new stepper under warranty. I just ran the stepper again yesterday without any parts on it and it still locked up. Here is a video again:

We will see if this really fixes all the problems once it arrives.

@eap6dra: I think it will be the same trigger for both problems: Too much resistance when turning, which leads to overload of the stepper. in your case probably by the not aligned gears, in my case probably a defective bearing in the stepper. I think if everything works for you, you don't have to worry.

Thanks a lot for sharing Nils!! Videos and problem definition in your posts are very clear and useful to us users.

It makes sense what you are saying. By logic, the instability in the stepper could indeed be caused by its internal bearings being locked, not necessarily in the extrude assembly.

I am very glad you could get a new stepper and.. under warranty!

Hope everything will get fixed for you and I am very interested to know any future development!

Good Luck and happy prints!
