Firmware Improvement: Add prompt before manual color change - Current procedure tangles filament

I tried a color change for the first time and I'm not happy with how the firmware does this.
I thought, when it's time for the change, I might get a prompt to initiate the change
(maybe even a beep, so I know it's waiting for user action)
and then I could do the procedure basically like I would do an unload/load filament action.
But it just automatically initiates the "unload" action without any prior prompt, pushing the filament out,
causing the filament on the spool to lose it's tension and making it curl like a let loose flat spiral spring.
This will ruin the precise manufacturer winding and I then have to laboriously
take off a dozen or so windings (under constant tenstion) until I find the spot where the coil is still intact
and then manually re-wind all that lose filmament back into place neatly line by line.

Would be nice if you could get a prompt before the change starts, so you are ready to
guide the unloading filament back onto the spool, or at least to prevent the spool from losing tension when pulling the filament out.

Not sure how it works with the MMU2S module. But I guess, there, the filament will never
be completely let loose, right? Just pushed back a bit in the filament buffer. Although even that sounds bad too.
But at least for manual color change, the current system is a bit of a headache.

How do you guys work around that?

Never had an issue with that. Yea, it auto unloads. Could this be put on a prompt? Sure, and probably a good idea and perhaps posting on the Prusa GitHub site as a feature suggestion.

But even now, for me it's just not a big deal. I just rewind the spool on the spool holder for a couple of turns and it's fine.

and then manually re-wind all that lose filmament back into place neatly line by line.

I just don't bother with that. Unless you somehow tangled the filament (which is hard if one end is still in the feeding tube) it's just cosmetics.

I'm not sure I understand the comment about the MMU2 because that works with the Mk3S, which doesn't have a Bowden tube and doesn't require the long unload.

Thanks. Yes, I watched the MMU2 in action on a MK3 and was fascinated how much more my MINI pushes it back
due to the bowden towards the hotend.
The tangling thing.... theoretically you can catch a winding under another winding when you just pull it tight
without much thought.
I've a huge horror of getting a failed print because of this (or basically because of everything...),
so I try to keep all things I can influence as optimal as possible.
But I get that that's probably just me then and I shouldn't worry that much.
I'm not new to 3D printing, but I don't do it every day and never did a color change, as said.
And maybe I watch too much YouTube about how to avoid planetary level extinction events when printing. 😋

Thanks for the input.

Then print yourself one of the self re-winding spool holders that are available , lots here https://www.printables.com/search/all?q=rewind%20spool%20holder

RE:

There are already a couple of issues about this, including this one, which I originally supported:

https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware-Buddy/issues/1345

However, I have since changed my mind (see my July 12 post). Give it some time, I think you'll find it's a non-issue 🙂
