Prusa Mini+ first layer issues

I have a Prusa Mini+  and I have has issues with laying down the first layer. I am using 3D Solutech PLA filament using the default Mini settings. I am able to do the first layer calibration but the small square looks like a screen. It's almost like it doesn't extrude enough plastic to create the first layer. If I raise the z offset, it doesn't stick to the bed plate. I try and lower the offset and it gets to the point where it sticks to the nozzle and all heights in between. I have tried glue which seems to help the bed adhesion. I know it's something I'm doing wrong and the youtube videos don't help! 🙂 Anyone have any ideas? I am running Slicer 2.3.0 with firmware 4.3.0

Thanks,

Kevin

RE: Prusa Mini+ first layer issues

It would help knowing if your Mini is new and you never succeed with first layer calibration.. or it worked fine before and started to behave like that lately -I assume you have new Mini.

First, don't use glue or whatever, because it's not needed. For PLA, first layer must stick to bed without any additional stuff -assuming you use smooth bed sheet that comes with Mini.
So, if first layer doesn't stick, you need to look for other reasons. Few comes to mind: Z-offset (nozzle distance to bed is too big), bed or hotend temperature too low, extruder doesn't feed enough filament (which you observe/assume)...
Now, if not enough filament is coming, that doesn't necessary mean it's extruder's fault. For example, if nozzle temperature is too low, filament doesn't melt fast enough and so extruder just can't push it. On the other hand, it's possible extruder itself isn't able to deliver required amount of filament: make sure extruder is properly assembled and adjust idler tension screw to get smooth & evenly extrusion.

RE: Prusa Mini+ first layer issues

All good points @BogdanH offered. The picture doesn't look like underextrusion so my money is on bad first layer calibration. Try this method instead of the built-in one: https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting/life-adjust-z-my-way/ . Much easier to interpret than the stock approach. Maybe post a few pictures of your calibration efforts as you get closer to -2. If you're hitting -2 and don't have a good first layer, you'll have to reposition the PINDA. Also, what sheet are you using? The textured sheet is a bit trickier than the smooth or satin sheet with PLA but not impossible.

RE: Prusa Mini+ first layer issues

Thank you both for the info. This is a new Mini+ that I purchased at the end of last year. I have printed a few things but adhesion has always been an issue.

This morning I performed the first layer calibration with the link that fuchsr linked above and when I got low enough, the part would drag off the bed. I pulled the nozzle and looked at it with a loop and found that there was a burr on the face of the nozzle from when it was made. I filed it off and reset the Z offset and it looks outstanding!
