y and z self test failure after update to 5.1.0

After updating Prusa Slicer software from 2.6.1 to 2.7.0 I felt forced to update the firmware to 5.1.0 after a message in Slicer that firmware needed to be 5.1.0 or higher. So I downloaded the stable 5.1.0 version from the prusa hompage. Flashing firmware was no issue but then the problems started. While x axis passed the test, Y axis failed instantly after starting the test (moved to back position and then immediatly to the front position) and also the z axis cannot be moved completly down manually. The zero point is somewhere in the upper third and it just stops there. After reverting back to 5.0.1 the self test passed flawlessly. Now I wonder whether this is a known issue and if I really have to revert the slicer version also back to 2.6.1. Any ideas what to try next?

Update...  (after some tea and biscuits) I decided to fool the calibration step to see if it was the travel amount that it was unhappy with....   when I moved the Y axis forward with the controller like suggested before, from -4mm on the back stop, to the furthest forward the controller would allow, (211mm) showed me that the bearing wasn't actually being used as the dead-stop at this distance anyway,   yet during calibration, it failed the Y test when the bed smashed against the front panel with the leading bearing, probably around 214mm forward if it were measured.  to stop this, rather than adjusting my bearing incorrectly and against original build instructions, I put the end (2mm flat) of my tweezers on the end stop in question, (the little bearing clamp for that rail - front left), thus preventing the bed from smashing against this during calibration... It passed straight away !!  😀   double checked, going back to calibrate without this there and it fails...  tried again with my fool in place, and it passed.  clearly not running it with this in place, just used to pass the calibration,   Maybe going to print myself a little TPU buffer for this so it doesn't keep hitting the bearing in future.

I have the same issue since 5.1.0 beta - i hope that 5.1.0 final would correct the issue but it still remains.

I am not able to calibrate y axis. Issue and behaviour like DrNick.

I would try resetting to factory defaults and proceed from there (run all the tests).

Thanks for your suggestions. Sadly neither belt tension (higher or lower´) nor resetting to factory defaults solved the problem.

Guess I will stick to 5.0.1. Set Prusa slicer to gcode output. So it is still working somehow.

Here's a video of the failed self test with 5.1.0. After switching back to 5.0.1 - no issues.

Same issue here. The video looks the same as my experience. I tried altering the belt tension, etc. Reverting back to old firmware also failed y-axis test until I reset all settings. But I also find the belt tensioning app gives such inconsistent readouts on a variety of phones/tablets at any degree of tightness that I can't be sure I have that 100% correct. Back to 5.0.1 for now though, where it isn't complaining.

I just found this post on redit https://www.reddit.com/r/prusa3d/comments/182yz13/mk4_y_axis_failed_after_flashing_510/ that is suggesting bearings may be misaligned. I'm in the middle of printing something on the old firmware now and have run out of steam for trying something else today, but it does look like one might have shifted a tiny amount. So that could be the culprit. But you might want to look under the build plate and see if the bearings are no longer lined up dead centre.

Well, I tried making the adjustment and it didn't help unfortunately. This picture is the before state with the bearing off-center. So I'm reverting again to the old firmware.

Mine is the same...  can't say it was since the update,  as it was fine for a few prints, but now its just awful,,   TPU won't print,  clicking and jamming,  it was perfect before,  I can't get the Y axis to pass,  just reset to factory default and it still won't pass...?   I don't understand what has changed, other than the front bearing is used as the end stop for the Y when moving forward, if this had moved it would have pushed it inward closer to it opposing bearing, pushing this forwards (further than what it shows in the build manual and what it was originally set at) will only reduce the amount of travel in Y forwards, without any feedback from the unit as to WHY? its failing we don't really know what it wants us to do to solve it...  if only it said 'i'm moving too far forward' or my Y-Step count was too high' ?  then we could propose a suitable fix...  here we're just guessing and messing, quite possibly screwing up the mechanics of the machine because of a faulty brain... then when they update firmware and fix the brain, we'll be left with a machine that is mechanically 'adjusted' to try and cope with the previous flaws in firmware. It's not good enough really, with a brand new machine vibrating and grinding like this it doesn't really give me much confidence in its longevity after shaking itself to death due to a faulty piece of code... there has to be some recognition for the additional damage and wear these things can so when they go wrong because of a fault, or random adjustments being suggested and followed by the massed on this forum without real prior testing and confirmation that it won't effect the long term running of your machine. I'm all for 'tinkering' but brand new machines of this value should be perfected by now and those in that IT room need to be reined in when it comes to updates, stop rushing and get it right please, we wait 6-8 weeks for delivery of the machine, where all other main brands are off the shelf,  why do you think we're in a rush to try 'Beta' software ?  It only helps you speed up your testing, all the while using our machines as your test bed. I would rather wait and be sure it won't mess up my machine.  kind regards.

Had a look on the bearings... positions seem ok to me.

As mentioned above. I think I'll stick with the 5.0.1 firmware for the time being since that "fixed" the problem. Maybe I'll have a look on the next firmware update.

I tried loosening the belt and also fastening the belt. Unfortunately, both did not work with my printer.

As suggested previously,  don't adjust anything,  your machine hasn't moved mechanically,  just put a 2-3mm block (end of tweezers) inbetween the endplate and the bearing you all want to move out of place, do this during calibration, it will hit this and not go over its 'software limit'...  then it'll pass... and it doesn't go past here during normal use in gcode anyway so won't cause any issues until they fix the bug.  thanks.  😉

I was all set up with a shim to try your trick LilyPink, reloaded the new firmware once again, decided to just do a normal test first because I wanted to film the failed test in slow motion so I could see if the bearing hits or not. And it passed! So I haven't tried your workaround, as I feel I should leave it alone for now!

Not tried printing anything yet with this firmware.

A comment on github had me checking out the assembly instructions again https://help.prusa3d.com/guide/7-y-carriage-heatbed-assembly_438310#458177 and step 19 actually says to have the bearings more to the centre of the bed (out of center from the pockets), so maybe mine didn't slip and I just followed the instructions accurately. But there are some recent comments on there from others having the same trouble. If I am understanding the workaround correctly, it suggests to me if anything the bearings should be further in the opposite direction to the instructions. I also wish the tests could give a bit more feedback as to what it didn't like.

The tweezers trick worked for me too. I am sure I aligned the bearings as to the instructions and I don't want to disassemble the printer now to fix it. The tweezers trick made the self test pass, and the printer is still accurate and autohomes to the same position as before.

Yep, I can confirm, it happened to me this weekend on 5.1.0, and Y axis calibration was constantly failing, even when there was no mechanical modifications to printer, putting tweezers tip between bed and bearing on front left, fixed that, but this has been extremely annoying whole week.
