Filament runout sensor not working

Hello,

I just had a very long print fail on the last few layers because the filament runout sensor did not detect the end. I bought this unit pre-assembled. Does this thing have a runout sensor? Is it even enabled? Very disappointing.

RE:

It does, and I've had mine fail several times as well.  I've bitched but all we can do is wait to see how they fix\improve it.

(edit) I don't think its a matter of the hardware working, but more the software working reliably.

How many people changed from the original optical MK3 filament sensor to the newer style?

Did Prusa cover that change, or was that cost passed to the user to make it work better?

My optical one still constantly errors if I don't turn it off for certain filaments, ones I wouldn't even expect it to complain about.

My filament sensor stopped working the other day.  I can trip it if it rotate the filament in the extruder a few times until it contacts the sensor but if I just normally put filament in, it won't detect it.  It worked fine for the first few weeks.  I feel like something is blocking it from moving freely or something but I can't open the extruder as I don't have any disassembly instructions yet.

That sucks to hear, hopefully it's just a matter of putting a bit of oil in the hall sensor cavity or something simple.

I do recall my mk3s behaving the same way and I ended up taking a deburring tool to the channel the mechanism moved in and it worked perfectly after that.  I'm not going to dare open the MK4 extruder without assembly instructions though.

The extruder isn't that complicated inside, to be honest, you can easily work backwards from the assembly instructions.

My filament runout sensor just failed again too, it continued printing despite there being zero filament left... This is the second time this has happened. I figured the first time was just a fluke but beginning to think it doesn't even work.

Pretty disappointed with this, time to try some different things I guess. Good to know I'm not the only one but leads me to believe more that there's a design flaw or common issue.

With my new MK4, if the load filament does not load correctly but pops out (yes my fault), it will continue to think it has loaded and try to start the print.  If you say unload filament, it says filament is loaded though clearly there is none.

I have the same issue as Jon916, but (maybe this is pure coincidence) is it possible that this started after updating to FW5.0 ?

In each case, I'm not trusting my MK4 anymore when it comes to changing filament mid print.
