RE: Filament changing bug?

This is extremely frustrating - ok I get it I probably have some issue with my sensor that needs fixing - but to not have an override on this is just poor design.

The machine thinks it has filament stuck in it, but it doesn't. But I can't finish a filament change because of this and it results in having to throw out my whole print.

I'll try the power plug hack but please Prusa add a manual override!

HELP

is this the same

I have a mk3s and a new MK4  and my issue is that each time I go to print a new SLT after the calibration and after the pre line in the top left is done. the printer slides over and stops and asks for a filament change after I unload and reload it prints the entire job without a hitch. this happens each and every time.

RE: Filament changing bug?

I am very disappointed! On my second print on a new MK4s, using the Prusa samples. First filament runout after having passed calibration. Frustrated that this is no reasonable workaround?

RE: Filament changing bug?

The only workaround I currently know is to turn off the filament sensor.

RE: Filament changing bug?

the problem is here for a year. Is Prusa so incompetnet so they are unable to fix it ?

RE: Filament changing bug?

I can confirm this problem still exists. EXACTLY like all of you said, when color-changing filament mid print, it gets stuck on the "remove filament" screen, even after no filament is inside anymore. Failed several prints because of this, this is very frustrating. Anybody has an update on this?

Just adding an "OK" button to this to ignore the filament sensor and proceed to the next step in the filament change would be all that was needed. I had a print go south on me this way at the filament change a short time ago, and had to resort to manually cycling the power switch on the surge protector the Prusa is plugged into to get it to advance, and then it just continued without properly loading the filament I had stuck into the print head; if I hadn't had the foresight to do that before turning the power back on, the print likely would have failed.

This.
First time encountering this issue.
23hr print job, and decided to use up some left-over rolls.
Prusa knows how to do a filament change, right? With all the *years* or experience, they're gonna get it right, RIGHT?
1 AM, 13 hours into the print. Wake up and wandered down to my printer *JUST* in time to see the filament run out. What Luck!
Then I hit this bug. Did not know what to do.
Did not know about the power cycle hack, so I hit Reset.
Angst. Sadness. Depression.

RE: Filament changing bug?

I've just loaded FW v6.2.4 onto my i3mk4, and this issue seems "better".

I instigated an "out of filament" by cutting the feed. The printer did wind up on the "filament not unloaded" screen as before, but with a few pushes of new filament, things moved on and it resumed printing.

There was an annoying loop of purged filament at the last second before it resumed on the print bed which gummed things up in that area, but things generally went "not too bad".

RE: Filament changing bug?

Nope. Still Fails.

Tried uploading a cell phone video, but the upload on this forum fails (probably because I'm not at the necessary trust level).

The filament sensor behavior during a filament change that happens in the middle of a print behaves differently that an filament change that is commanded from the menu system. It always gets stuck thinking that the filament has not been unloaded. I tried the power-cycle trick, and it resumed printing "in the air" after the filament change ... a good 30mm above (on the Z axis) from its last location ...

Sigh.

My other option is to do a commanded filament change during printing ... i.e. commanded from the menu system while printing ... hope that works ...

I've got a *bunch* of mostly-used rolls sitting around because I can't start a print unless I'm sure there is enough filament on the roll. Not a newbie either ... Printed 3700 hours on my Mark 3 and I'm 1500 hours into my Mark 4. Did the Breath Flute (www.BreathFlute.com) on these printers ...

RE: Filament changing bug?

The same thing happened to me, I didn't read the screen and got stuck at the screen. Now I got a small allen wrench in the top and it prompted me to insert the new filament. I continued the print like nothing happened.

I had fallen into the same filament changing bug, and the power panic just made the printer restart without changing the Z axis, which meant that it was 'printing' about an inch above the previous layer. Blowing canned air into the nextruder hole didn't work, but just slipping one of the small Allen wrenches from the tool set down the filament opening tripped the sensor perfectly and allowed me to continue. Thank you for the trick; I'll have to rig a small magnet sheet to the upper frame of my Mk4S to keep that Allen wrench stuck to in case I have problems with the filament sensor in the future.

RE: Filament changing bug?

Had the exact same issue with my MK4S. Since my MK4S in a Prusa Enclosure,  I loosened the PFTE tube and was able to (easily) remove the remaining piece of filament. Put the PTFE tube in again, fed the printer some new filament and it continued to load. My print continued , thankfully 😀

However, Prusa, this needs to be fixed ASAP !
