Is it a remix when I modeled it myself and changed the design?

Hi,

today one of my Benchy models was deleted because remixes are prohibited by the license under which the original model was published. I want to mention that I really like the original model and totally understand that the creator doesn't want others to just remove the text on the bottom and pretend it was their own model.

On the other hand, there are so many modifications of the Benchy on the web that I never thought it to be a problem to just built upon this idea. Especially with such an iconic model as the Benchy is.

Over the time I created a multitude of 3d models that were inspired by the original 3d Benchy. I never used any files from others to create my models, I copied the style and appearance of the Benchy but modeled everything myself. Also I didn't just reverse engineered the models but changed them significantly. My deleted model was a benchy in style of a catamaran (attached image).

I believe that the amount of work I put into this by modeling it myself and the modification of the concept are enough to qualify it as a original model rather than just a remix. I see it more as building upon a great idea.

If I drew a portrait in the style of the Mona Lisa, with the same pose, the same colours and the same composition but with a differnt person and a differnt background, without stating that it was an original piece by Leonardo da Vinci would you consider this a fraudulent act?

I also want to mention that the model is on Thingiverse since 2018, much longer than printables even exists. (I know this it not really an argument but I wanted to include this here.)

Should I be afraid that my other Benchy inspired models will also be deleted?

Leonardo da Vinchi died in 1519; Copyrights in Italy last for 75 years after the death of the creator; you are free to use his work.
