Uneven Extrusion

When I got my Prusa Mini it was printing great. I started with a cheap PLA but had some clogging issues, so I switched to a more reliable Prusament PLA. A week ago, I tried printing a desktop phone stand that I designed and the quality was quite bad. The extrusions were inconsistent and when I was removing the supports, the bottom part snapped off. I printed it again with different settings which helped it a little, but it was still bad. I checked the Z distance calibration 5 times with no success. It would go well for a few seconds and then start extruding a blob every centimeter. I tried different filaments, a cold pull, and other unclogging methods, none of which have worked. I think the extruder drive gear is causing the problem, but am not sure. Can someone please help me out? This is the second version I did:

I think you might have some z banding.  There are a number of resources online to fix it.

Try drying your filament and reprinting.  It probably won't be a complete fix but moisture may be obscuring the underlying issue.  Come back if problems persist.

Cheerio,

  • I’m in the middle of another print after following both of your advice. Here’s what my first layer is looking like:

Your first layer is either too low or you're under extruding or both.

How long have you had this printer, how many successful prints have you had, and how long have you been printing?

Tell me more about the clog and what you did to correct it.

Cheers

RE: Uneven Extrusion

I’ve had the printer for a little more than a year. I’ve had about 5 successful prints. It’s my first printer and I used to design and print files at my local library until i got the printer. The first thing that i did to correct the clog is turn up the heat and push a small piece of filament through. Then I did a couple cold pulls but nothing came out. My print also successfully printed with the rest of the layers printing perfectly.

I've seen that herring bone pattern in some of my prints that were under extruding.  Are you saying your printer is now working well?  Perhaps you had a clog that cleared itself.

Cheers

Yes, I'll do a test first layer to make sure, but I think the printer is fine now.

I'm not sure if you got my last post, but I did the first layer calibration again and it was perfect. I realized my nozzle was a bit too low, but it's fine now.
