Print troubles with PETG

I've recently tried to revive my Mini+. I had stopped using it as I couldn't get it to stop leaving strings and blobs everywhere with Prusament PETG. This is still happening.

Prints turn out mostly acceptable, but not great. I recently printed a couple of benchys and noticed the strings and blobs, as well as some issues along the prow.

I also printed a test model. I'm not sure if it's the best test or not, but it certainly isn't turning out right.

Things I've tried:

  • I've tried raising and lowering the nozzle temperature by 5 and 10 degrees.
  • I've tried increasing the retraction by 0.5 and 1 mm.

I'm not sure what else to try, except for going back to PLA and writing off PETG for good. If anyone has any insight, I'd be thankful for it.

With PETG you should always try to dry the filament first before you change any other setting in the slicer! Filament just fresh from the sealed bag is not guaranteed to be dry enough. If the filament is dry enough it will print fine with the stock profile, especially if it is Prusament.

I've had this spool for over a year. I was rather thinking it might have gone bad or something. Some of my initial prints with it were just fine.

I reverted back to stock factory print settings - but everything seems to be just the same as the bad prints.

Make sure to dry the filament spool in open air for at least 4 hours in about 70C (or a bit less), using for example food dehydrator. It changes filament properties a lot.

Next, print the temperature tower to see how it influences the filament behavior, and adjust temperatures.

See my GitHub and printables.com for some 3d stuff that you may like.

So I've been trying to print a temperature tower. But today my printer is getting halfway through the first layer and retracts the filament over 1 cm but continues to try to print. This is a new problem for me, has never happened previously. I was making (bad) prints just fine yesterday.

I have purged the filament 3 times now, not realizing retraction was happening. I've also tried printing multiple different towers using both PrusaSlicer and downloaded gcode. I seem to get the same results each time. Roughly 50% through layer 1, it retracts the filament but keeps going.Print bed showing a failed print and a retracted filament
