Mini+ reverse elephants foot???

I am still fairly new to 3d printing, the Mini+ is my first printer. Recently, my prints started bulging out on the top layers and I can't figure out what is going on. I tried printing the Fidget Clicking Wheel 2.0 https://www.printables.com/model/231691-fidget-clicking-wheel-20 and as you can see, the top layers are sticking out further than the bottom layers. I even tried to modify the stl to add a chamfer to the top and bottom. But that had no effect. The only mods I have done to my Mini+ is the Bondtech extruder (not the heat-break). Has anyone else seen this? or hopefully know how to fix it?

Printer: Mini+

Firmware: 4.4.1

Mods: Bontech Extruder (only extruder not the heat-break)

  • Z-Axis Length 190
  • Extruder Step 415 (tried 415-420 no difference)

Filament: I have only used Prusament PETG, no other filament.

Attempted fixes:

  • Redid first layer calibration
  • Tightened belts and all screws
  • Squared xyz axis
  • Checked "External Perimeters Firsts" on slicer (zero effect)
  • Tightened/loosened tension on extruder
  • Scaled print larger and smaller (zero effect)
  • Sacrificed Haribo gummies to the 3D printer Gods (no effect)
  • Reduced bed temp and nozzle temps (no noticeable effect)
  • Dried my PETG

Forgot to note: I'm using the stock Prusament PETG profile (except when checked "External Perimeters Firsts") at .15 layer height.

First off, me too.

This didn't happen after you installed the Bontech extruder, did it?

One thing I'm noticing (and again I'm not an expert) is that the lower layers are not sticking out as far as the layers above them. You said you re-did the 1st layer calibration. What does the first layer look like?

I honestly don't know for sure if it was happening before. I would only print objects that didn't need to be accurate. Like frogs and other useless things. I changed to the Bondtech extruder because I hated how the factory tension worked. It wasn't until recently that I started printing objects that required higher accuracy. Like gears, that's when I started to notice the issue.

Weird. Yeah I'd say your first layer calibration looks great. I think I will try to print this gear later and see how my printer does.

I see a lot of comments regarding the Prusa extruder tensioner, like your comment, or people talking about constantly adjusting the screw. I set my screw, and haven't touched it since. Maybe I got lucky?

I would definitely appreciate you trying to print it, just to see. I scaled it bigger and smaller, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

It started clicking pretty loud for some reason too and sometimes it would be hard to feed the filament into it. I'm sure I just needed to clean and readjust it but opted for the Bondtech. It's definitely higher quality than the factory one, I really like it.

So I had some different gears, for a model transmission, that I had printed in PLA this weekend. I took a close look and sure enough, the tops stick out slightly. Weird…

I’ll try to get pictures later.
