Changed to 0.8 nozzle. Problem setting first layer height. Solution?

Ok folks,

I wanted to try out the 0.8 mm nozzle I had bought a long time ago. I installed it after looking at the video, no problem there. But after that I am trying to do a first layer height calibration, running into problems there. Tried 3-4 times with the same results. I wonder what am I doing wrong. I am also getting tick-tick sounds from the filament. Maybe the filament is wet? Same filament was printing fine with 0.4 mm nozzle

Please advise.

Please take a look at this photo. See what is happening?

PS: On the lower left corner, I noticed that the Z was probably too low. So I increased the Z height, hence the ticker yellow filament toward the end of the calibration print.

However, during the Z type printing traces, no matter how much I lowered the extruder (using Z live adjustment), it kept on printing those dash-dash type lines 🙁

Hi,
Did you reset the Live Z value to zero, before starting Live Z calibration?

Tick Tick Tick sounds usually mean that the filament, can't escape the extruder...
If your nozzle is too low, this could be the reason your filament cannot get out...

are you using a first layer calibration print that is set up for a 0.8mm nozzle?

regards Joan

Hello Joan, Thanks for your reply. Here are the answers to your questions

Did you reset the Live Z value to zero, before starting Live Z calibration?

Yes

Tick Tick Tick sounds usually mean that the filament, can't escape the extruder... If your nozzle is too low, this could be the reason your filament cannot get out...

Yes, I did, if by that you mean going into the printer settings and choosing nozzle size 0.8 mm.

Also in the Prusa slicer, I added a nozzle and created a simple 25mm x 50mm box which was 0.8 mm tall. Tried printing that. It was printing fine but it wanted to print as second layer. So I stopped it.

I tried a couple of more times.....same result. Then I thought maybe the satin sheet needs to be cleaned.....seemingly the filament is not sticking to the sheet, so I washed it thoroughly, but still the same result.

Now I suspect that the printer is not outputting enough material to lay down a continuous line. How is that changed in the printer settings, to tell it to extrude more filament?

ok I changed the filament to a new one. It still behaves the same 🙁 So wet filament is not the issue.

Hi.
have you added the 0.8mm nozzle profile from Prusa slicer, configuration, configuration wizard?

Yes, I have.

I sliced and printed something in the evening today. It did print, but pretty lousy finish and dimensions.

By the way, the first layer calibration is inside the printer itself, I mean it's a feature of the printer hardware.

That doesn't have anything to do with gcode from the slicer (IMHO)

Hi,
I haven't used the prusa first layer calibration tool for Years... I believe  it has changed to ask what filament you are using, but I don't think it adjusts for different nozzle sizes.
it may still be expecting a 0.4mm nozzle... in which case the extrusion would be way out of whack!
I have attached a file for a first layer calibration print, sliced foe a 0.8mm nozzle using PLA.  It should look like the image below, when it prints.
Could you try using it to set the correct Live Z value, for your printer, please

the image below, is from the Prusa handbook

good luck.

From your picture it looks like you are using the built in Z calibration... that only works for a 0.4 nozzle as Joan points out.

If you can use either octoprint or Pronteface you could try this method: First Layer Z adjust skip the first bit if you are happy your SPINDA is in the right place, read it carefully and take your time but it should get you in the right ballpark regardless of nozzle choice. its needs terminal access as the printer menu only lets the nozzle go down to 1mm and to do this you need 0.2mm! I have also found that if you use a torque wrench to change nozzle (2nm only!) then the Z value only changes a fraction +- 0.015 normally for me at most, maybe you could start with your previous 0.4 nozzle value subtract say 0.1 or 0.2 to be on the safe side, from it a slowly work back down to a new value?

Oh! Well, this is crazy! I hope somewhere in the documentation it would be mentioned that the "in printer" Z adjust is ONLY for the 0.4 mm nozzles.

I wasted hours yesterday trying to make it work 🙁

But thanks a lot to both of you for catching that issue. I will try to other procedures now.

Oh I am so sorry! I just realized that I posted my question in the wrong forum. I do not have a Mini, I have the regular MK3S+

Dear Moderator...Is it possible to move this thread to the MK3S+ forum?
