Any recommendations on a Spool Holder mod?

I just don't like the original or the plus spool holders. The filament doesn't seem to feed smoothly, and with a full spool the retraction of initial load will occasionally unspool just enough filament to cause it jump out of the spool. If I don't notice it, when I start printing the filament ends up wrapped around spool holder. This happened to me on the first fresh spool I loaded after installing the new plus spool holder. I am new, and basically only print in PLA and PETG (have done some ASA, TPU, and PCCF), so I don't need anything to fancy, and this will never be a business. Plus I only have about 15-16 cm between the side of the Core One and the wall to I don't have space for anything that sticks out.

Searching Printables shows many mods, but which ones have the forum users actually use, and do they actually work better than the stock for smooth feeding and staying on the spool?

I used this one for a while and it works well: Prusa CORE One Bearing Spool Holder I've since removed it (in fact I don't have any spool holder installed) as I only print from the dryer or a dry box.

Thanks @hyiger, it looks good, but the accompanying video shows it is a bit difficult with a single hand, and with only 15-16 cm on the size it would be a one handed change. I guess I am off to search for a spool holder.

OK, I didn't read that in your original post. One idea would be to print from a dry box from a shelf above it and feed it in with a long Bowden tube. There are also top mount mods available. I also remember seeing a mod to attach a spool to the left side.

Any of other options top mounts, dry boxes, etc. including original recommendation would require reworking the printers workspace for the 4th time in 2 months.

Looking around, the only one I found that will most likely work for me would be Steff137's Spool Holder, so that is the one I think I am going to be looking into printing next. Thanks for the ideas.

with a full spool the retraction of initial load will occasionally unspool just enough filament to cause it jump out of the spool.

That is indeed a common issue, and most spool holder mods, including the one hyiger linked to, don't really help as the main issue is that the distance between the top of the full spool and the PTFE tube is so small. Steff137's Spool Holder may actually help as it seems to lower the spool overall but there's actually not one photo provided that shows how the spool sits in the holder, just a bunch of black on black renders (seriously?) ☹️ There is one make posted, and indeed it looks as if the spool sits lower, so it may help with the filament slipping.

Which is precisely why I removed the spool holder and only print from dry boxes now. Prusament spools were the worst. They always jammed up on me.

It seems like one could print a simple arm, held by a magnet or three that would cross the area between the spool and the Teflon tube, preventing the filament from moving outside the spool area. Armchair idea, so no guarantees.

If you only print PLA/PETG/TPU then just remove the top, print a top load mod,  replace Bowden tube with a shorter one. The problem with that though is that on the MK4 the print head only moved in X (and Z) so it was better constrained.

It will probably be a couple of weeks before I get around to making this change, just too many other things to get printed. This is a hobby and what the wife wants printed takes priority because if she is happy I can buy more filament and other toys. But the ideas and observations are good. Once I get something tried I will post what I came up with.
