Terrible printing after installing Bondtech extruder on the Mini+

Hey, I've installed a bondtech extruded for the mini and I can't seem to get any of my prints printing properly, first layer goes down smoothly and then fails horribly when the printer gets faster.

I've tried cold pulls, cleaning the extruder, tightening and loosening the quick release, extrusion multiplier, switching mini versions, applying estep in model gcode, changed bowden ptfe tube, fiddled around with volumetric speed and nothing seems to have any effect.

I'm currently lost and have no ideas what to try.

is the bondtech extruder geared?

if so, have you added commands to increase the 'E' steps per millimetre?

I have Trianglelab clones of the Bondtech extruder on my Minis, and what you're seeing is definitely not normal. Sounds like e-steps not set correctly. Easiest way is probably to add

M92 E415 ; set e-steps

to the custom startup gcode in Prusaslicer's Printer Settings.

Or create a one line gcode file and "print" it after starting your Mini.

The alpha of Prusaslicer also supports 3rd party extruders directly.

You may also want to upload a zipped version of a 3mf project file, so we can check your other settings.

RE: Terrible printing after installing Bondtech extruder on the Mini+

I have 8 Mini's and i was close to throw them all away even after i upgraded them with Bondtech extruder.

After all the things i did i almost gave up but then i decided to try correcting e-steps (although i didn't expect too much) and my God, that was mirracle. At first i set 420 steps and print came out almost perfect, little bit correction to 418 steps and no problems any more. Some wanted original 415, some 417 or 418.

Why is that so i don't know, they are identical but as long as it solved my problems i don't care 🙂

Have you corrected the esteps? on firmware version 4.3.3 you can do it directly on the printer.

Mine works perfectly fine. Have you followed the installation guide? just asking.

This thread is 2 months old and OP never came back to it -I see no point on asking further questions.

Maybe a suggestion to develop an archive for these

hi,

Can I know how you managed to find the perfect number - did you print a calibration cube or something? or was it based on visual inspection?

I am also planning on upgrading to a original Bondtech or perhaps a Bondtech clone  ( uses same 3:1 gearing ). My experience with the stock extruder was/is pretty bad. It prints well with Prusa filaments though but the moment I change to something else, I can see some inconsistencies. I even printed the temperature tower to arrive at the perfect temperature for the 3rd party filament. So the only issue I can think of is the extruder.

Thank you.

Cheers,

MM

hi,

Can I know which esteps worked for you? Thank you.

You can easily calculate the correct e-steps for your extruder. Here is a tutorial:

https://all3dp.com/2/extruder-calibration-6-easy-steps-2/

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

Cool, thank you. I had tried that method for my stock Ender 3 but I was thinking probably there's another way to check (for Prusa Mini).

Thanks for the link - I think probably that's the best way to get the most accurate e-steps ( for a "specific" printer ). I guess even tiny variation, inconsistencies in gears result in e-steps that might be somewhat different for different printers, even though they might be the same brand+model.

Cheers,

MM

RE:

I am having the same exact issue, with the Triangle Labs clone. I am almost positive it is something with the esteps not being set or saved. I've set them both in the printer (running firmware 4.3.4), and when that didn't work, set it in the slicer.

First layer prints completely fine; every other layer severely under extrudes.

Also, can't upload the 3mf file "for security reasons", says this forum. if anyone has ANY help, let me kno!

Hi Mealilo

you need to zip compress a .3mf file, then the forum will allow you to attach it!

Hi Mailo
have  you set t he microstepping ratio? how many microsteps per step?

when I put a different extruder on my  Mk3, the microstep ratio was set too high, and I got under extrusion.

I played around with the screw tensioner, seems to be printing a bit better.

Does anyone know if the retraction settings need to be changed when installing a new extruder?
