looking for a 'remote extruder' mod

I stacked my mini and the spool vertically. Currently the filament takes a big S path down and back up and back down with some sharp bends.
I saw some idler guides that made the bends less sharp but I was thinking about mounting the extruder on the top of the mini's Z-axis.

Have you seen such mod? What should I look out for when relocating the extruder to the top?

Do you also have a filament sensor?

I don’t currently run a filament sensor.

Hmm.. I don't know of any remote extruder - but you could consider ways to ease the path of the filament to the extruder - there are plenty of filament guides mods out there.  One of my first mods was to add this simple and totally unnecessary rounded cap to the PTFE tube - maybe it will give you some alternative ideas?

Put the filament under the Mini feeding up through a hole to the right. That would not require a change in direction.

In my mind, the Mini is not that easily modable. It is a low cost, complex design with each part optimized for the whole, especially with the Bowden extruder and cantilevered hot end. Mods will work, but are more likely to cause something else to be worse. Adding any weight is going to cause more problems. I've seen successful mods where they added another tower so there is support on both sides. I expect when you do that, you are getting close to the cost of a MK3S+. You might as well buy one of them. Or, get one of the cheap copies of the MK3s+ and mod away. I'd rather spend time printing instead of moding.

Mark

Hmm, would she notice if I drilled a hole into the cabinet?

I’ll have to take my extruder off anyway because there are some nuts that freely spin in my z-carriage. I’ll try printing with the extruder disconnected and report back.

Put a lack table on top of the cabinet. Put the filament below that and drill a hole in the lack table. Put the printer on top.. You might need some weight added.
