Bondtech Extruder for Prusa MINI
Hi all,
anyone tried this Bondtech Dual Drive Extrusion Upgrade Kit for Prusa Mini?
RE: Bondtech Extruder for Prusa MINI
it works well until you upgrade to the firmware. It is definitely quieter and reduced the amount of stringing I had. I don’t worry about setting the tension to high on the extruded and grinding a hole in the filament. I am going to post a screen shot from bondtech page explaining how to to deal with the firmware issues for now. I am still working through it myself. After reading this I have double check I placed the G92 code in the correct spot.

M92 sets the extruder steps per mm. G92 is a different function, it "homes" the extruder "position".

🤦🏼♂️ Got it... sorry got confused by @jaydubblazer mentioning G92, but the docs state clearly M92. Thanks for clarification.

To set the Extruder steps look here:

Sorry about that I messed that up. Failure to pay attention to details.

I think they could have at least provided thermal paste and replacement zip ties inside the kit.
I will have to wait until I can run to the store to get these now, but most of the stores are closed around here due to COVID19.
Their shipping options to the US is pretty limited and overpriced as well. $19 to the U.S. for small / lightweight package - it should be half that price.

@omari
Yeah, shipping from Bondtech, even to Germany is quite expensive (same amount in €), but I luckily found a reseller that ships for free 😁
I've ordered some zip ties on Amazon, but forgot about the thermal paste 😕
RE: Bondtech Extruder for Prusa MINI
Mine came with zip ties.

I might have to try this one. It looks promising.

Those who have the Bondtech, are you also running a M500 line in the start g-code after the M92 E415?
RE: Bondtech Extruder for Prusa MINI
@unknwnrider
Yes. Otherwise it's only temporarly, M500 saves the e-step value to the eeprom. You could also change it in the firmware in configuration_prusa.h

@karl-herbert
🤔 Now I'm confused: If M500 stores the values, why do I need to put it in the start G-code? I would just have to run it once, right?
I guess that is why they are mentioning it here: Feeder Upgrade Kit - Step by Step Guides
Some changes in Mini Firmware prevent permanent storing of values (Step 40/41), so that's why you have to add them to start G-code (Step 39)
RE: Bondtech Extruder for Prusa MINI
Yeah, it's a known issue in 4.0.5 firmware https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware-Buddy/issues/364.
Downloading DIY firmware is a an option, but potentially losing warranty is a serious deterrent for me, certainly not worth it to fix e-steps.

@oliver
You can of course also write it in the g-code. Then you may not forget to add this to a third-party file. Otherwise you have problems with the print result. In order to be able to write values to Eeprom, this option must be activated in the firmware. How it is with the guarantee, you have to ask Prusa.

RE: Bondtech Extruder for Prusa MINI
I assumed that Mini owners would be familiar with the Prusa position on downloading user firmware to the Mini: https://blog.prusaprinters.org/original-prusa-mini-now-shipping/
Custom firmware files and warranty
Several of our customers started discussing the fact that in order to flash a custom firmware into the MINI, you have to physically break a little tab on the mainboard. Breaking this tab allows you to flash an unofficial firmware but also voids your warranty on electronics.
Without risking warranty, we are limited to using the official Prusa firmware, and right now, the latest version 4.0.5 does not allow writing E steps to EEPROM.
I expect it will be fixed in a future release, but the best workaround in the meantime is to change the Gcode.
RE: Bondtech Extruder for Prusa MINI
Thanks for all the input. Bondtech updates arrived yesterday, can't wait to do the upgrade.
RE: Bondtech Extruder for Prusa MINI
Yup, literally just received trianglelabs dual-drive extruder (bondtech clone), so will be trying it later!

Have fun with it and don't forget the M92 code in the gcode files. 👍
