@towlerg

No flames, just a friendly addendum for clarification. While Autodesk created quite the furor when they changed the licensing model for Fusion 360 a few months ago, the hobbyist version continues to be free, albeit with some restrictions. Some of the more advanced CAM/CMC capabilities have been moved to the paid tier, and you can only work on 10 out of an unlimited number of projects at the same time. But it seems that after that initial uproar most people have realized that for the target audience, the hobby designer/3D enthusiast (such as me), the free version is perfectly adequate.

Having said that, your choice of modeling software needs to reflect your specific needs. Would I use Fusion to model minis? Certainly not. The good thing is that there is actually quite the range of free or cheap modeling tools out there that should suit everyone's need. The downside is that I found all of them have a fairly steep learning curve, but with the help of oodles of YouTube videos it's worth the time investment

And one more: I went through the preview in one-layer mode, and I don't see a layer in which anything is printed on thin air. If you could point out which layer you mean, maybe that helps clarify things.
