Paver in enclosure or other ways to silence printer futher.

I was wondering if anyone has tried to make the enclosure more quite.  The Enclosure itself quiets the printer a ton but I live in an apartment complex and am worried someone will complain.  Right now when I'm not home I turn off my heat in my apartment and throw a blanket over the enclosure.  It doesn't get above 26 celsius in the enclosure so I don't think it is a fire hazard.  I put it on stealth mode but still kinda loud.

I have it on an ikea Lack but even if it is on the ground directly it still is a bit loud.  I was thinking about getting some sort of foam or foam rubber pannels to put on the inside of the enclosure, maybe all 5 sides and leave the door side alone.  I was also thinking about getting a paver/foam and putting it in the case.  has anyone done this yet?  It looks like there might be enough vertical height in the enclosure if I put the filament on top of the case instead of in the case.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have used both a paver and a 450mm floor tile.  Both performed equally well.

In the enclosure?  Did you put anything beneath the floor tile like a foam pad?

I have used them both inside and outside of an enclosure and it reduced it with or without the enclosure.  I added adhesive cork or felt feet to the tiles or stone.  I have 15 printers so I used what I had on each.

Ah thanks, I thought I was being silly putting a paver, or a tile, in my enclosure.  I'll give it a try.

Did you remove anti-slip dampers, or did you put a paver on top of them?

I just put a 20 mm mat out of rubber granulate under my enclosure. Those are called protective or protection mats for buildings. In Germany they are called "Bautenschutzmatte". Whe have one word for everything :-).

I had seen that in a posting somewhere either here in the forum or on printables and wanted to give it a try. It certainly removes the drum effect from the enclosure that amplifies the noise from the printer. I found one that was 60x60 cm, cut off a bit on one side and cut out squares for the feet. The bottom plane of the enclosure rests on that mat now. They come in different thicknesses, 20 mm seemed about right for me.

That's a fantastic idea!

The store i went hat only 40x60cm mats in 20mm used for Washingmachines etc., or giant matts (about 110cm x 230cm x 8mm, but the giant mat wasn't even double the price of the 40cmx60cm one, so i went with it.

i cut 3 sheets 42cmx47cm to put under the enclosure (i left the feet in place).

2 pieces was a bit to low for the status led bar.

That's rock solid and way quite.

Since i had cut 2 stripes of that mat i did cut another 42cmx47cm mat and placed it on top. that made things even quieter, just laying there heavy on top.

I used a rubber mat and a concrete slap!, super happy with the results, just the cable for the lcd is really not very long!

Here are the feeds i used:

I wil be getting my enclosure soon. After reading this thread I am left with a few questions:

  • What is the size in cm of the pavers you use?
  • Is it also an option to put the paver under the enclosure instead of in? Mane purpose for me is sound/vibration canceling
  • When putting the paver in. Do I remove the dampers? Or can I put the paver on top of the dampers?

Thanks.

leaving the enclosure as is an putting something underneath works fine.

you might want to put a thin layer of e.g. a rubber mat between the paver and the enclosure bottom to prevent scratiching.

If you want to leave the enclosure feeds attached and have the paver within the feed, so that the feed don't touch anything, 40x40cm is the way to go.

If you whant to remove the feed, go by 50x50

And why not placing the feet on the mat without the bottom plane resting on it? I will build my enclosure today and will try to find the 'Bautenschutzmatte' here in the Netherlands. Shouldn't be to hard as a neighbour country 😀

Because the mat is supposed to eliminate the resonances in the enclosure body created by the printer's movement. You do not get that if you place just the feet on the mat. The contact surface is to small then.

Thanks for sharing. I suppose that it is also important that the 4 enclosure feet do actually touch the ground and stand firmly? To avoid the wobbling of the enclosure.

No, it is not important that they touch the surface under the mat. You could also just leave the feet off, I guess. Leaving them on just makes it easier putting cables through the inlets/outlets on the side. I have several cables for USB, LED lights, and the Prusa addons. Cutting the mat is easy with a carpet knife.

yep, putting the feed onto the mat does nothing, your want to silence the resonance of the bottom (and maybe top) sheet of metal.

The feet touching the ground is not necessary, but it feels like the case is like a boat in water if they don't, but you can shim them with cardboard or a 3d print if you want.

i got a large sheet at bauhaus here in germany, the product-nr was 20696179, unfortunately you don't seem to have the same product-numbers over there, but that might help you 🙂

It's basically the same rubber mat that you get to put under your washing machine so it stays inplace, but lager and less expensive 🙂

RE: Paver in enclosure or other ways to silence printer futher.

I have the original Prusa Enclosure and have built a Lack enclosure for Grandkids.   Some ideas.

From your description, sound transmittal through the floor or Ikea Lack table may be the primary problem.

The hollow legs and nearly hollow tops of the Lack tables echo or increase sound.   Under the printer in my lack enclosure I used fire resistant Neoprene sponge rubber that was .25"/6mm thick on the floor.  Similar to what  Schorsch3000 did with his mat.

To reduce sound transmission to the floor from the Lack table legs, I added "Tennis ball Feet"  or a mat would help.

I have "Squash ball feet" on my MK4 in the Original Prusa Enclosure.  I use them since I prefer to have the printer a little higher in the enclosure and want the space underneath available.   I don't need any other sound measures on the Original Prusa Enclosure.  It is next to my desk in the main room of the house and the sound does not distract us.
