Z-Hop

Hi.

What happened to Z-Hop?  Was that removed from PrusaSlicer, or does it have a different name now?  If it is still there, where is it hiding?

Thanks!

RE: Z-Hop

Its where its always been and has the same name its always had.  Its never been called Z hop, its in Printer Settings>Extruder>Retraction>Lift Z.

There's also an override under Filament Settings>>Filament Overrides if a particular filament needs a different value to that configured for the extruder.

Also for the last several versions it has been possible to search the settings in Prusa Slicer.  Use the magnifying glass icon that is available top right when you have any of the 3 profiles selected/editing or by using cntrl+F.  Putting a simple "z" in there shows all 4 settings that relate to Z.  Click on an item once it appears in the search list and it takes you directly to the setting.  See https://help.prusa3d.com/article/search-function_196752

Yeah, I never had occasion to use in PS, so I never knew what it was called... I just read other posts were people were still calling it z-hop, so I figured it must have a name change since I could not find it by that moniker.

I found z-lift right where you said.  Thank you.  I must have looked over it a dozen times today, and it never really sunk in.  Thanks.

RE: Z-Hop

This is inaccurate in 2.9.2. There is no section called PRINTER SETTINGS. There is a section called PRINT Settings but this is not where Z HOP is. It may be under PRINTERS/Extruder 1/Retraction AND THERE IS NO mention of "Lift Z" under retraction. Under the TRAVEL LIFT section there exists "Lift Height:" in mm. Is this the Z Lift? Under FIlaments section/Filament Overrides in my case nothing is selected. I have a tiny 4 mm scratch after my 1st layer prints which I am trying to remove and got it handled with what I thought was Z-Offset but it creeps up here and there ever so lightly with no real impact but I am trying to find this ZHOP setting and all the posts repeat above instruction which is clearly out-dated. Is Z-Hop now under Travel and called "Lift Height"? Should I set this to my Nozzile size of 0.4 mm? Thanks.

RE: Z-Hop

Yes the names are no longer accurate from a 2 year old post.  Prusa Slicer is under constant development and things change.  It is now where you mention.  In between then and now there's a whole new set of options for a different lift type too in that section (ramping left).

Printer Settings is now called Printers.  There is still one or more sections for the Extruder depending on how many you have configured, so those have been named Extruder 1, Extruder 2 etc.  The section it was in is now called Travel Lift, and yes the setting is now called Lift Height instead of Lift Z.  I guess to make it easier for people not used to 3d naming conventions for printers where height is usually defined as the Z axis.

As you what to set it to, the nozzle diameter has no bearing on how high you want to lift the extruder after each layer.  Set it to whatever height you feel comfortable with.  Be aware though that as z movement is generally the slowest axis on many printers that the larger the value the longer your prints will take.  It can make a significant difference.  As the user though you are in control and responsible for any and all changes you make to settings.

0.4 is a good value and many default profiles use it.  About as many that use zero, or 0.25 or.......  well you get the idea.

RE: Z-Hop

Hopefully this will help avoid confusion for people in future readings of this thread, what "Printer Settings" tab is called now, depends on where and how you open that tab in PS, If you open using the shortcut Ctrl-4 or the drop down in the Window menu it's still called "Printer Settings". However, if your clicking on the Settings button to open the tab it's still listed as "Printer Settings" but is called "Printers" on the tab displayed. Same goes for "Filaments" AKA "Filaments Settings"Ctrl-3. As well Lift Z is still called Lift Z in "Filament Overrides" and others.

I don't mean to put to fine a point on this, but thought it could be confusing to newer users.

RE: Z-Hop

In 2.9.2 the filament over rides use the same names as those shown on the Printers>Extruder section.  So its changed there to Travel Lift as well with Lift Height being the settings.  But yeah they do seem to have missed quite a lot of the various places in their renaming process.

RE:

This was by no means meant to imply you "neophyl" weren't correct. I made a point in mentioning this. My point was, as I mentioned without putting to fine a point on it. Is that Prusa tends to not Care, Check, or even appear to try to make this easy for new users. You and I could look right past this and never think anything of it, knowing what these mean.

I have prepared images showing exactly what I had explained, however that seams somehow pointless. I'm not wrong, and neither are you.

This was intended as more, "not covered in this thread" information, for new users.

@largriff

Prusa tends even in their advanced classes to only give the most basic of information. If they know, and gave you the most advanced information, you might expect to much from them. Meaning more then they offer. Good luck, I hope $24 will get you were you want to be.

Just my opinion, but because of the way this post has turned out, I'm bowing out I can't appreciate the information here at all. One feels threatened, and another thinks Prusa school is the answer, the community is ill, and the persons who recognize this are under attack. It feels like the trump administration.

Good luck to you.

Oddly enough no way to unsubscribe to this until I receive an e mail from prusa, 🤔
